Weight Loss. Girl on ScaleSometimes goal setting can be a difficult task. Especially if you are just starting and have nothing to measure or compare to past experiences. You can set one goal, or set a series of goals.

Typically I like to set a series of goals with rewards, that I believe will lead me to my biggest goal. And here is the the deal with the smaller goals. I set them in a way that eventually they WILL happen, its just a matter of my hard work whether it happens sooner or later.

Here is an example. Say your big goal was to lose 20 pounds. My First goal would be to lose 5 pounds. That's it, that is my goal number 1, and after that goal I have a reward set for myself to keep me motivated. Now I know in order to reach goal number 1 I need a plan. The plan is the step by step and day by day activities I set in order to reach goal number 1. Now it may take me a week to hit my first goal of losing 5 pounds, or it may take me three weeks. It is really up to how hard I work, but I will eventually reach that goal.

My next goal would be to keep that 5 pounds off for 2 weeks. Again a goal that has an end, but now forces me to continue the things that got me to my first goal. If I continue to lose weight than that is great, that pores into my 3rd goal of 5 more pounds. It is okay if the goals overlap, because if you keep the first 5 pounds off for 2 weeks but also lose 5 more pounds, then you achieved both.

Eventually all my small goals would lead to my larger goal of losing the whole 20 pounds. And a long the way there are rewards for every goal met. Rewarding yourself is GOOD. Do not feel guilty about it, humans need all the motivation they can get and sometimes a small reward is great. Now if you are trying to lose weight you may want to make your reward something other then sweets. It can be anything from a pair of pants, to food, to a night out with friends. Be creative with it.

So go out and set some small goals to get you to your big goals.
