Walking ExerciseWalking is a great low impact exercise that can be done by almost everyone. To get the most out of your walking routine there are a few things that you should invest in.

Walking Shoes
Finding the proper walking shoe is essential. There are several varieties to chose from, some being more costly then others. However, a comfortable supportive shoe can help you maximize your workout. Three things to look for in your shoe are:
  • Flex: The front of your walking shoe should easily bend. The arch should not.

  • Roll: When you take a step forward, you should not feel any pinching or resistance.

  • Stability: When you lean back you should have stability in your shoe. As you walk your heel should feel secure and stable.

Pedometer
A pedometer is also a fitness must. Using a pedometer allows you to keep track of the distance that you walk while you are exercising. You may want to wear your pedometer all day to keep track of all the steps that you take. It is suggested that you take 10,000 steps per day; this is equivalent to 5 miles. Wearing a pedometer throughout the day can motivate you to pick up the pace to squeeze in a few more.

Journal
Keeping an exercise journal is also a great idea. It is a great way to keep track of all of the steps that you have taken. A good suggestion is to record the day, the amount of time that you exercise, the distance that you travel, and you may even want to record the route that you walk. A journal also helps to keep you accountable. When you know that you are recording your progress you will be less likely to skip the workout.

If you are determined to get in shape, grab your gear and start moving.
