Home WorkoutHow Avoiding the Gym Helps You Avoid Comparison

Going to the gym can be a rough experience. There are days when everyone in the gym seems to be ripped, buff and beautiful. Except, of course, for you. It can feel as though you are the only person in the place who needs to drop those fifteen pounds and who needs to firm up her thighs. Some days, it can seem as though you are the only one without a blonde ponytail!

One of the best things you can do for yourself if you find yourself in a place where going to the gym is getting discouraging is to stop going. Take a break from the gym and create a different kind of workout for yourself. This break might help your self esteem, your motivation, and you wallet!

Workout out in your home can help you build your self esteem. If you have taken a long hiatus from working out, you might not want to begin again in a gym where people are watching you struggle to get back in shape. Beginning those workouts at home can give you the time and space necessary to develop your confidence again. You can struggle through those pushups and cardio challenges in the privacy of your own home, at least until you feel like you have made enough progress not to be embarrassed.

Sometimes taking a break from the gym and working out at home is good for simply because you do not have to compare yourself to anyone. It can be discouraging to be in a class at the gym with a person next to you moving easily through the workout while you are struggling. There is no way to avoid comparing yourself to that person, but if you work out at home, you might find that you are just easier on yourself in general. You might let yourself off the hook a bit more and be more satisfied with the results of your own workout.

Some people are great at sharing their workout goals with others. Some people practically paste their diet and exercise goals on their foreheads so everyone knows what they are up to. Lots of people are uncomfortable putting those goals out there. If you are more that type of person, working out at home might allow you to accomplish your goals at your own pace, in your own time, without having to discuss your progress (or lack thereof) with anyone.

Gyms are great places to find companionship and motivation. But sometimes, we all need a break.
