Is there anyone who hasn’t made plans to exercise or get fit or eat better, only to fall short of the goal. New Year resolutions are especially notorious for this sort of thing, but by now most people can’t remember what their New Years resolution was. Very few resolutions of that sort last until the next New Year, but they remain among the most common of resolutions made. Any real lifestyle change has to last beyond the initial excitement of the moment. A realistic personal exercise plan should set reasonable goals with the understanding that results will not be instantaneous and may in fact take a great deal of work before the desired goal is reached.
The first priority is scheduling. Creating an exercise plan that does not fit in with the current lifestyle is doomed to fail before it even begins. After the excitement of making the commitment of beginning a personal exercise plan, many people often overestimate just how much time they can dedicate to it. At first, a couple hours a day might work out, but as the first flush fades, the time spent will diminish, and often peter out altogether. It is important to plan well ahead when considering an exercise plan. The first burst of excitement will probably not last as the plan goes from resolution to routine.
Any good personal exercise plan will be a priority. Accountability is the key for a long-lasting plan. The day will come, or perhaps the week, where the motivation to exercise will just not be there, and the desire to become more fit and healthy is nothing more than a dim memory. These are the times that will truly test that resolution. A personal exercise plan has to be a mandatory part of life and rigidly adhered to. If it is an option that can be neglected, it is likely to fall by the wayside sooner rather than later.
Make note of any goals and keep track of progress. Personal accountability is probably the best way to keep track of everything. Being able to see the goals clearly delineated in black and white makes the process tangible. Seeing the physical changes as they occur can be a great motivator in and of itself. Working out with a group has been proven to keep one motivated. That is why any home workout dvd can keep you motivated as you workout with a professional personal trainer and with others on the TV. Shaun T has created the Insanity Workout to help keep you motivated, even when it gets tough. Any hard workout will in fact make it harder for you to stay motivated. Why is that? I think its because people like to take it easy and the fact that the word ‘work’ is in it, makes it less appealing.
The whole point of a personal exercise plan is healthiness. Too narrow a focus, like losing a certain number of points, will make an exercise plan a temporary thing rather than a lifestyle change. Focusing on total health can make a personal exercise plan a lifelong goal.
