How to Do Butterfly Chest Exercise with a Butterfly Machine

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

butterfly machineA butterfly machine will help you perform fly chest exercises if you do not know how to do dumbbell fly exercises.  What you can get with this exercise machine is that you train your chest muscles as you are sitting up straight.  Your arms will be guided in the proper form with the use of the arm rest that comes with some butterfly machine to help isolate the contraction in your chest muscles.

Set the equipment with your preferred weights and sit on the butterfly machine.  Your back must be fully flat on the pad of the chair.  This will help isolate the chest muscles better.  If the seat can be adjusted, arrange it so that your arms are in a horizontal position parallel to the floor. This is now your starting position.  If your butterfly machine is not equipped with an arm rest, always maintain your arms in a horizontal position and never let your elbows hang freely.

Exhale as you bring the handles forward by pressing them together with your hands.  The power you exert should come mainly on your chest.  Your shoulder muscles should not move, and should main relaxed with your back straight and flat on the pad.  Hold the position for a second, maintaining the contraction in your chest muscles.

Slowly return back to starting position as you inhale.  Do not release the tension on your chest and you should feel your chest muscles stretching once you reach the starting position.  Repeat with the number of recommended reps and sets.  If you do not have a gym membership, then the P90x workout and Insanity workout has some great exercises for your chest.

Ketogenic Diet: Is it Right for You?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Ketogenic diet, or Keto diet as it is commonly called, is a diet plan that consists of high fat, adequate protein, low to zero carb diet.  The aim of this diet is to force your body to utilize fats and put you in a state of ketosis.

dietTo fully understand how ketogenic diet would work for weight loss, you must be familiar on how the body produces energy for basic bodily functions.  Cells get their energy from glucose, a type of sugar that can only be found in carbohydrates.  Any excess glucose will be converted to glucagon in the liver and also stored as fats.  A limited amount of glucose in the diet will make your body use the stored glucagon in your liver, as well as convert fats into glucagon.  This conversion is called gluconeogenesis, which is initiated by lipolysis or breaking down of fats.

Because of the absence of glucose, your body is forced to produce ketones.  Ketones are a byproduct of fat metabolism, and are utilized by the body as energy instead of glucose.  An excess amount of ketones in the blood will result to a state called ketosis.  Now, it is important to understand that ketones are only utilized by muscles and organs, but not by the brain.  Ketones in the brain are considered toxic and life-threatening and can produce coma.  Such is the state that happens in ketoacidocis, a condition commonly experienced by diabetic patients.

Experts and proponents of the ketogenic diet attest that the state ketogenic state that you are in is not similar to those experienced by diabetic patients.  The ketogenic phase that you experience in the ketogenic diet is called Ketosis-lipolysis.  Although you have high amounts of ketones in your body, it is not enough to produce detrimental effects.

Once you see the menu for a ketogenic diet program, you may find that it is somewhat similar to Atkin’s diet or Southbeach diet.  It is somewhat true, but also somewhat false.  The purpose of the previously stated diet is, of course, fat loss.  The purpose of the ketogenic diet, however, is also fat loss combined with muscle mass retention.  With ketogenic diet, it is important that you have an active lifestyle to have the full benefits of the diet.  That means regular sessions at the gym, working out, and fitness training.

Before you go for this type of diet, make sure that you do not have any medical or metabolic disorders that will be made worse. These can be but not restricted to: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.  Consult your doctor and do appropriate lab tests before you undergo ketogenic diet.  The Ketogenic diet might not be the diet you want to do for your P90x extreme workout or your Shaun T Insanity Workout.

Swedish Massage: A Way to Relax and Rejuvenate During Weight Training

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Swedish massage was created in Stockholm, Switzerland by a Swedish physiologist Henri Peter Ling around 1812.  This type of massage is highly popular and a lot of people attest to its ability to produce desired results.  It performed by using a series of 5 massage techniques delivered in a systematic manner to promote relaxation and well-being.

swedish massageA Swedish massage is good for many purposes: it aids to give you relaxation, help you achieve faster muscle healing after a vigorous exercise, and also aids in pain therapy.  As long as you communicate well with your therapist, he or she will be able to give you the best type of massage depending on your physical condition and preference.  You can have the option of having a light massage for relaxation, or a slightly heavier massage to invigorate your muscles and promote blood circulation.

When you enter the room, you are expected to disrobe.  You have the option of either going naked or keeping your underwear.  It does not matter either way, and your massage therapist must accommodate your preference.  Some prefer to go on the buff once they are comfortable with having someone touch them without any clothing.  There are some Swedish massage centers that will provide you with drapes and some will not.  A body part that is to be given attention will be the only area exposed, leaving the rest of your body covered.  Soothing aromatic oils are also used to help ease the friction of the therapists hands on your skin, as well as to help you relax and feel at ease.

Some prefer having a massage after training or working out as the massage can help flush out accumulated lactic acid and help ease muscle pains and aches.  See if your fitness center has a private area for this purpose, or fine one that is close to your gym.  Massages can help you greatly after a P90x workout or an Insanity Workout.

Targeting your Abdominals with Bent Knee Hip Raise

Friday, September 18th, 2009

This is another compound exercise that will help you target your abdominal.  You build strength on your abs as you raise the lower half of your body while maintaining abdominal tension.  All you need is yourself and a good exercise mat to cover the floor.

Bent Knee Hip RaiseLie flat on the floor with your arms at straight next to your body a pronated position (hands or palms facing down).  Bend your knees in an angle of 75 degrees while keeping your feet flat on the floor.  Your back must be straight, your shoulders flat on the floor and your neck and head in a straight line.  This will be your starting position for this exercise.

Exhale as you raise your knees and hips with the use of your abdominal muscles.  Keep in mind to maintain the angle of your knees while keeping your arms and hands straight by your side.  This motion must be done slowly with constant tension on the abdominal until your knees are right at your chest.  The end position will be with your hips and lower back off the floor, your shoulders and arms straight down while keeping your abdominal tight and your knees bent.  Hold this position for a second or two.

Inhale as you go back to starting position, still maintaining the tension in your abdominal.  Never release the tension of your abdominal during the entire exercise.  Each motion must be done carefully and never abruptly to prevent injury.  If you find this exercise easy, you can increase the difficulty by wearing ankle weights or straightening your legs.

For some other great Ab routines, you will want to check out the Ten Minute Trainer and P90x Workout routine.

The 3-Day Diet

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The 3-Day Diet is a form of fad diet introduced in the late 1980’s with the purpose of losing 10 lbs in just one week.  Those who follow this diet plan attest to its success, but others are finding it a hard time to get around it.  You follow the diet for three days, and then come back to “normal” way of eating on day 4-7.  The cycle goes on until you have achieved the desired weight loss.

Those who follow the 3-day diet believe that the menu plan will force a metabolic reaction that will help you burn fat to lose some extra pounds.

Breakfast

Lunch

Dinner

1st Day

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A piece of toast with 1 tbsp peanut butter

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A half a cup of tuna

A piece of toast

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A half a cup of carrots

A piece of fruit

2nd Day

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

An egg cooked in whatever prerence

A piece of toast

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A cup of tuna

A piece of toast or 5 saltine crackers

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A cup of vegetables side from ½ cup of carrots

A half cup of vanilla ice cream.

2 hotdogs or meat of equivalent portion size (2 oz.)

3rd Day

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

5-8 pieces of saltine crackers with a slice of cheese

An apple or a grapefruit

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A piece of toast with egg

Black coffee or tea with 1-2 little packets of Sweet & Low or Equal (or water)

A cup of tuna

A cup of carrots

A cup of cauliflower

A half cup of vanilla ice cream.

If you look closely at the menu, the mix of food and portions are not enough to produce a metabolic reaction other than slowing it down.  There is no fat-burning process that would result to a reduction of weight.  There is severe caloric reduction, leaving you with almost 1000 calories in a day.  This severe calorie restriction is the cause of weight loss, not to mention loss of water.  You will only take in approximately 4 glasses of water in a day.  Aside from that, the severe lack of carbohydrates will reduce your body’s ability to retain water.  Both elements are needed to maintain physiologic processes in the body.  A prolonged application of the 3-day diet will lead to health complications because of lack of proper nutrition.

This is not a diet you want to do for your Brazil Butt Lift workout, Insanity Workout, or the P90x Workout.  These workouts have their own nutrition guides that you should follow.
