Lovin' Those Left Overs
I stopped in at a fast-food restaurant for lunch today, as I often do, and ordered something off the menu. I won't tell you what it was, but I will say this... it wasn't a salad. (I don't believe in counting calories, I believe in portion control.) As I waited for my order to be prepared, I took a look at a rack which had brochures containing nutrition information for everything the restaurant sold. There was also a placard giving ten tips on how to lose weight. Nine of the ten tips given were fine, but one tip enraged me. "Always try to leave a bit of food on your plate." Never! My sister was guilty of this. She, her husband, and their four-year old son lived with us for a month while they were searching for their own place (having just returned from life overseas.) Although the boy consistently showed that he didn't have much of an appetite, either my sister or her husband consistently gave him a plate with an adult-sized portion of food, encouraging him to eat it, but saying, "If you leave a bit, that's okay." And he always left about two-thirds of the food on his plate. Yet the next night, he'd get the same amount of food. All this did, in my opinion, was to encourage the kid that wasting food was okay. My point is.... don't waste food. There is nothing to be proud of in leaving a third or a fourth of your meal on your plate to be thrown away. (The exception, of course, is if you don't throw it away, but rather wrap it up in foil and have it for breakfast or lunch the next day. In that case, the practice is fine!) American restaurants, for the most part, are guilty of giving their patrons very large servings of food. I'm not talking about fast food restaurants, but sit-down restaurants where you typically get an entree and three "sides." (How long this will go on is problematical, as the government will undoubtedly soon be legislating the size of the servings restaurants are allowed to serve.) There is a simple solution... instead of forcing yourself to eat all the food given you, and instead of wasting it by throwing it away, simply ask for a doggie bag, take it home, and have it for lunch the next day. I do this all the time, and frankly, no matter how good the food was the night before, it always seems to taste better the next day! Now I'm sure many of you do that already, but many more don't...whether because they're embarrassed to ask for a doggie bag or what have you. Well, don't be embarrassed. Think of it as getting your money's worth, which is needed now more than ever, in these tough economic times. If you enjoy eating ethnic food such as Chinese, then you need to know that you can eat healthy Chinese food as well. Many individuals that have ever tried Chinese food have found out exactly how tasty it can be, but they also know how unhealthy it can be. Oftentimes, if you select the right type of Chinese foods to eat, then you will not have to worry about gaining any unwanted pounds. The first step with selecting the right kind of Chinese food is to learn the lingo. Chinese dishes will often have funny names such as Jum, Chu, Shu, and Kow. It will be helpful if you learn what these words mean, prior to ordering your next Chinese dish. Obviously, anything that has been steamed will be good for you, but where do you go from there? If you see the word “Jum” in the name of a dish, then you will now know that the dish has been poached. The word “Chu” means the dish has been broiled, while the word “Kow” means the dish has been roasted. The word “Shu” simply means that the dish has been barbecued. Any dish that has been either, lightly or dry stir fried will be great for you. Any dish that has been braised is also good for you. However, on the other hand any dish that is breaded, fried, or even coated in flour would be a dish that you would want to avoid at all means. The Chinese eat with chopsticks for a reason; this helps them eat a lot less oil. You could probably give this a try, and see if it works for you. As far as those famous Chinese sauces goes, you need to know that they are loaded with corn syrup, sugar, flour, and cornstarch. Two very popular Chinese dishes that you should avoid are General Tso's Chicken or Pork and Sweet and Sour Chicken or Pork. Although these dishes taste great, there are ways to order them so that they will be healthier for you. The majority of Chinese restaurants will offer their patrons hot mustard sauce, oyster sauce and Hosin sauce, which are much better for you. However, please note that you can always order your dish so that it has only half the sauce, this ensures that you get half the calories! You should really avoid any unnecessary sides such as those delicious crispy noodles. These noodles get their dark coloring because they are soaked in oil, which can cause them to have thousands of unwanted calories. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Whether you want to lose weight or just stay in good physical and mental shape, exercise is good for you. Many people feel that they have to join a gym to get the benefits of exercise, or they have to take up some sport such as running. This is not true. There are a number of ways that you can exercise at home, even without buying gym equipment.Old fashioned exercises still work well to maintain a toned body. Sit ups, deep knee bends, push ups and leg lifts can all be done in the privacy of your own home and can help you stay toned. Years ago, before gyms and exercise equipment made the scene, people who wanted to stay in shape performed these type of exercises. They also practiced deep breathing and relaxation techniques before going to bed. These old fashioned exercises were nothing fancy, but they actually worked to keep someone in shape. To practice sit ups, lay on the floor on your back and pull your knees close to you. Crunch up with your body to a sitting position, concentrating on the abdominal muscles. Do as many of these crunch like sit ups as you can. These are low impact for your back and will work just as well as old fashioned sit ups that you performed in gym class. Leg lifts can be done laying on your side. Concentrate on the muscles that you are exercising as you lift your legs towards the ceiling. You will start to feel the impact of leg lifts as far as muscle tone right away. Another old fashioned exercise is jumping jacks. These are good way to start the day, before your shower, as they get your heart pumping and give your metabolism the boost that it needs. You can do these right in your bedroom without having to go to a gym or even put on gym clothes. If you want to stay in shape, joining a gym or buying equipment is a good step. But you can still get in shape by using old fashioned exercises that you can do right in the privacy of your own home. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Self-talk and internal dialogue can determine the effectiveness of our fitness routine, according to top psychologists. When it comes to exercise and losing weight, the majority of people do not realize how big a role their attitude can play. By having a negative attitude, there is every chance that your fitness program will fail. By taking two key steps in changing their attitudes, people can get back on track to achieving their health and fitness goals. The first step is to recognize how your negative thoughts are affecting your exercise plan. Once this has been achieved, it is then a case of challenging this negative thinking, and replacing it with a positive mental approach. It is crucial to remember that a thought it essentially just that – a thought. It is not reality. If you think you are going to fail, then there is every chance you will fail. In the same way, if you think you are not going to enjoy a particular exercise, then you probably will not enjoy it. The key in this example would be to find a type of exercise which you find more tolerable – if you hate running, try swimming. If you hate swimming, try cycling. The same process applies to food. If you think you are hungry, then you will likely eat something. By making changes in our thoughts we can make changes in our behavior. Mastering the required skills to achieve a beneficial exercise plan is not easy, but will come with time and will give you a great sense of achievement when it does arrive. If you stick to an exercise routine for a few months, it will no longer become a chore, but part of your lifestyle. Twenty years ago we never had mobile phones. Nowadays, we find it hard to imagine life without them. Imagine how it would be if you could do the same with exercise, making it so that you cannot imagine your life without it. By making the same changeover when it comes to exercise, it will become part of your daily routine. Here are some examples of how you can change a thought from negative to positive: Negative thought: I cannot find 30 minutes a day to exercise Positive thought: I could probably walk the 15 minutes to work, and 15 back, rather than taking the car. Negative thought: I’ll never be able to lose 20 pounds – it is too much weight. Positive thought: If I can lose one pound a week for the next 20 weeks, I will have lost 20 pounds. By making changes such as these in your thought process, you will be will on the way to achieving a successful and beneficial exercise routine. And the great part about it all is that as time goes by and you start to see results from your exercise plan, you will want to continue and see even better results. All of us struggle with those unwanted pounds. It seems as if no matter how hard we try, those pounds just will not go away. One of the best ways to fight the battle of the bulge is through meditation. The idea is that the calmer an individual is, then the less likely they are to binge on food that they do not really need.Meditation lets you open up your mind, body, and soul so that you are not reaching for that box of Little Debbie cakes when you are feeling depressed or stressed. Studies have shown that if an individual takes just thirty minutes a day to rest their mind, this will help to calm their nerves. As a result, the individual will be likely to eat less and exercise more. Do you feel that you do not have time during the day to meditate? How hard would it be for you to lay down on the couch, turn on some relaxing music, and simply relax? Instead of sitting on the couch and watching television, give your favorite TV show a miss, and do some meditation. If you do not want to listen to music, then you could sit in total silence to help quiet your mind. The idea is to find a quiet place within you, which will help rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, while you gain control of your emotions. As adults we also need that timeout every once in a while. As the old saying goes, “Stop and smell the roses!” Meditation is the act of quieting down, so that you can clear your thoughts. However, so many individuals find that this can be a challenge, because they have trouble finding a nice quiet spot to meditate. Meditation has been proven to help build an individual's creativity as well as help you get rid of those overly obsessive thoughts. You can not only prolong your life by meditating, but it will also help you to reduce your blood pressure during times of high stress. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Yoga has been understood in many ways. Some understand it as a path to spirituality, some as a way to a healthy body whereas others look at it as a tool to develop a healthy mind. No matter what form of Yoga you may seek, one thing is for sure: you will be lead to a path of clear thinking and sound judgment about yourself and others. There are some who practice Yoga purely for the physical benefits. However, after attaining physical perfection they realize that their minds have also undergone a proportional transformation. They realize that they can manage stress and anger better. Along with self discipline and mental enlightenment, they also find that their characters and personalities have been enhanced. Yoga helps one at the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical level. Age and experience teaches us to deliberate upon various ideas, think with an open mind and heed logical advice. However, Yoga trains the youthful mind to see things that are not obvious to everyone. At times we receive some eye-opening revelations, and that’s when we wonder why we couldn’t see and understand these things earlier. For some people, all good things in life are just fortunate coincidences; just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. However, in order to recognize the truth, it takes an ignited mind, or else many opportunities could be lost. That’s where Yoga comes in. Yoga enlightens the mind, enables us to think clearly and seize the opportunities that are always present wherever we go. When you practice Yoga, you stop believing in luck, but you begin to see a path other than the one travelled before. You learn to use the power of the law of attraction to convert your thoughts into reality. This does not mean that you wish for something to happen and then wait in expectation for it to be attracted towards you. Yoga not only trains you to focus your thoughts and recognize the opportunities, but also to act on them to bring them to reality. You will realize that the Law of Attraction does not drop fortune into your lap, but sets you up in a favorable situation where the right action can bring the desired result. Fat around the abdomen is the first sign of weight gain, and both men and women, especially post delivery women, see fat accumulating around the abdomen. Shedding that fat will take a regular and concentrated effort. You will therefore have to be patient and disciplined. Besides making you un-presentable, excess fat around the abdomen leads to several ailments, especially those affecting the gall bladder and heart. Here are some ways to reduce abdominal fat Exercise: Remember that although some exercises target the abdomen area, fat shedding happens uniformly all over the body, and not only around the abdomen. Exercises that target the stomach are good and help firm and tone the abdomen and they include crunches and knee-ups. However, in order to burn fat aerobic exercises are a must. Jogging, swimming and cycling are some great aerobic exercises that can help you lose weight. Sport activities such as basketball and football give you a total body fat-burning workout, having a great impact on your abdomen. Stair climbing can be done as a part of your daily routine, and helps reduce abdominal fat, apart from other benefits. Your lunch could consist of a low-salt soup, baked lean meat or fish, a vegetable dish and lots of fruit. It is a logical fact that obesity is caused by overeating. Although eating less does help, an obese person may not be able to decrease his food intake. This is because there may be an underlying reason behind the overeating. So let’s examine what goes on under the surface, and what can lead to overeating, and ultimately obesity. Our self esteem begins to develop during childhood and reaches a stage of completion at the end of our teenage years. Our self image is a measure of how much we feel accepted and loved, and how we have been treated by our parents, family and peers. Our self image determines how we behave, view the world and how we think the world views us. It is a fact that, even the best of parents fall short in fulfilling all the needs of their children. This is just a human inability due to various reasons and may not be intentional, but can have an adverse impact on the child. This can leave a child frustrated and not knowing how to cope with it. Then there are some children who get intentionally abused verbally, physically or sexually. Studies have shown that 25% of all obese people have been abused at one time or the other as compared to 5% of people with healthy weight. Again, the child is unable to speak about it and definitely not able to cope with it. It remains suppressed below the surface. As everyone is a product of their past, these unresolved hurts affect the behavior and relationships in adulthood, as the person stops trusting others. This brings me to the point: such a person finds comfort in food. The result is overeating. The individual may not realize this, and it may not be about greed for food, but just a way to cope with an unresolved past. If you have an unresolved past, you may have subconsciously sought consolation from food. Yes, you cannot do away with a healthy diet and regular exercise, but you need to deal with the past and thereby the consequences such as overeating. Remember, your past is not your fault, but your future lies in your hands. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X Finding a fitness video is not a difficult thing today. The big question is how helpful are they? Some people are hooked on to fitness videos while others are skeptical. The skepticism may stem from the fact that the video is being introduced by a celebrity. The first thought that comes to mind is that the celebrity is being paid for whatever is being said or presented. Then there are people who buy these videos just because of the star name. It is important to remember that celebrities make a living by providing their faces or opinions. It would be unreasonable to expect to look like them. The important question is- Do fitness videos help? There are many benefits of fitness videos, and some are mentioned below.Perfecting the Technique- There is a wide range of videos that are presented by experts with years of experience behind them. These videos can not only be bought at a reasonable cost, but can be used to perfect the techniques of a particular exercise forms such as Yoga and Tai Chi. Learning at Your Own Place- Everyone may not have the time to attend a fitness class. Therefore, a fitness video can enable you to work out at your own convenient time and place. Learning at Your Own Pace- Most fitness videos provide step by step instructions that can be replayed and perfected by you in your own time. A fitness instructor may not wait for you to learn if you find a particular exercise or posture difficult to attain. Keeping up the Pace- A fitness video could motivate you to exercise, as exercising on your own could get boring. Exercising while watching a video can get you in the right mood, and following the action and music in the video could keep you from slowing down your pace. Previewing before You Join- If you want to join a fitness class but are not sure as to what form of exercise to choose, a fitness video can give you a good idea about the same. You could view the various exercise forms and postures and decide beforehand whether a particular exercise is suitable for you or not. This saves you the disappointment of paying for the wrong exercise program. So pick up your favorite fitness video. You may have nothing but pounds to lose. Corporate Yoga is the in thing. More and more employers are using Yoga as a means of unifying and de-stressing their employees. Yoga does not require any heavy equipment, and therefore can be easily conducted in an office environment. Corporate Yoga can help reduce work stress and promote a positive state of mind among employees. You may want to consider the following guidelines if you are considering starting yoga sessions at your office.1. The Place Yoga requires a well ventilated space with a clean and carpeted floor, as the floor area will be frequently used. For hard floors Yoga mats will have to be arranged. The place should be preferably away from the work area where there will be not disturbing telephone calls or visitors. A board room with the chairs cleared away would be ideal. If the space is limited you may want to have a couple of sessions in batches. 2. The Time The best time to conduct a Yoga session is early in the morning when the mind is free. Then there must also be enough time in between for them to have their breakfasts and get ready for work. If a mid-day time is preferable to your employees, you can arrange for a before lunch Yoga session. 3. The Motivation Most employees cannot expect a yoga session at work, and therefore may be surprised on announcement of the same. Sending an email to them highlighting the benefits of Yoga can get them motivated and comfortable with the idea. You will also have to let them know if they have to pay for the same or if the sessions will be subsidized or free of cost. 4. The Instructor Finding an instructor is not difficult these days. There are many Yoga institutes that offer corporate Yoga programs. See to it that you choose a certified instructor. Although there are vigorous forms of yoga, the calmer traditional style is more suitable for an office environment. When a couple of sessions are through, you will find that a few adjustments would be necessary. Therefore you can encourage feedback from the employees and the instructor. This will keep your employees motivated and help you check the success of the Yoga program. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

It's that time of year when it's not just the turkey that's getting stuffed. The Thanksgiving table is full of irresistible treats and sweets, but before you commit yourself to an afternoon of gluttony, followed by the traditional unbuttoning of the pants in front of the TV, you might consider that there are a lot of options that are actually good for you. And, if you're the one planning the menu, you can include even more choices so that you can enjoy Thanksgiving without turning into a Macy's parade float. Thanksgiving Dinner
If you're lucky or unlucky enough to be hosting the main event, you can try some other things to "health up" the meal. Think about offering a salad course and/or a (non-cream-based) soup course. This can prolong the meal and conversation (which can be good or bad, depending on your family) and allow you to fill up on healthy stuff before the main-course shoveling begins. Also, try scheduling the meal so it isn't eaten in front of the football game. Then, you can pay attention to your guests and what you're putting in your mouth. If you're at the mercy of some other Thanksgiving host, hope for a cornucopia of vegetables that you can choose from or offer to bring something healthy and delicious yourself. By making healthy choices, you'll have something to be thankful for instead of a couple of extra pounds. Yoga is a non-aggressive form of exercise, and therefore some people wonder how it can lead to weight loss. On the other hand, there are people who have effectively used yogic techniques in order to lose weight. The key to any weight reduction plan is consistency, and if you practice yoga on a regular basis, it will have an immense effect on your body and your mind.Yoga helps tone up your muscles, strengthens joints, increases lung capacity and helps you achieve a fit and shapely body. It not only deals with the muscles and joints, but also stimulates various glands and strengthens the nervous system. A fit person loses weight faster, and that too as he or she goes about his or her daily activities. As your metabolism optimizes, you will not accumulate fat and will burn fat faster Yoga also enables you to develop a fit mental composure. It has been proved that psychological factors are said to cause obesity. Yoga reduces stress, hypertension and depression. Yoga therefore deals with the psycho-social causes of obesity. Some forms of yoga such as Iyengar Yoga are easy to perform as you will be using props such as chairs, benches, belts and pillows to properly align the body during various yogic postures. Although this approach is a bit different from traditional yoga, it helps beginners to attain postures that could take longer time to perfect. It therefore is a great weight loss tool. The eight-step Yoga is a dynamic form of Yoga that focuses on a series of postures attained, and the transition between them in synchrony with breathing techniques. This form of Yoga makes you sweat and burn calories. Although this Yoga takes much dedication and is practiced by hard-core yogis, it has gained the attention of many weight-loss enthusiasts. Another dynamic form of yoga that is being promoted by many gymnasiums and health clubs is Power Yoga. Power Yoga can give you a total body workout, and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Although there are quicker ways of losing weight, yoga will provide you with long-term and all-round benefits that you will not regret. Check out our yoga mats to help improve your workouts. When you are young, you have an enormous amount of energy. But as you age, your energy decreases. However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot get it back. As you get older, you want to get better. One of the ways to do that is make lifestyle choices like exercising regularly. When you develop an exercise routine that has strength training, cardio, and stretch exercises you will build strength and stamina in your body and also reduce any joint pain you may have that is oftentimes associated with age. Medical reviews have shown that regular exercise and help to slow the effects of aging.A regular exercise routine can also help to lower any risks you might have for illnesses like diabetes, chronic fatigue, or heart disease; not to mention boosting your immune system. Exercise does not have to start just when you get older, it is best to start now – no matter how old you are. However, if you are older, you should first get a medical examination and get permission from your doctor. So let us talk about the three main types of exercises to include when you begin your exercise regimen. The first is aerobic workout: walking, running, riding a bike, jogging. All of these exercises build the rate of your heart and makes your breath stronger. This is a good thing. When you are doing your aerobic exercise it should last longer than thirty minutes just about every day. Next is strength training like lifting weights, sit-ups, push-ups or pull-ups. Strength training is all about building muscle. You might see fast results or you may have to wait a while to see the results and the muscles you have formed. This should be about two times a week for more than 10 minutes. Finally there is stretching. This helps you to be more agile and flexible. Your balance and ability to bend quickly improves when you stretch regularly. Also, you strengthen your back muscles. All of these exercises require the right movement and technique. It is probably best if you get a professional consultation to learn how to do these exercises the exact way, and also get a chiropractic check to make sure that your muscles are not being strained from the exercises. You are now well on your way to having a healthy lifestyle with a healthy workout regimen. You will feel healthy and energized – like a whole new person. Take on the challenge in order to see yourself living a better life. Determine that you can do and stick it out to the end. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

We’ve done it all: push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, rolls, crawls, just about everything you can think of to get the tight abs you used to have – or probably never had, but always wanted. All of these exercise, while worthwhile, do not guarantee to work to give you the flat abs you’ve always wanted. It is all about your body. When you are in the process of losing weight, it is about what you do, and how your body reacts to what you do. Therefore, your body loses weight, at its own pace. It can happen fast or slow. There are many factors involved in losing weight, especially weight from your midsection. Some people begin working out and lose weight right away, while there are some people who do thousands of crunches and sit-ups every day and have nothing to show for it. Wouldn’t it just wonderful if you could simply start exercising and you would lose the weight and inches off your waist right away to have the body you want, without much work? It would be great, but it would never happen. The main objective of stomach exercises is to strengthen your stomach muscles. And this is definitely what it does. But there are 2 things you having a healthy diet, exercising and doing stomach exercises does for you: it reduces the fat surrounding your muscles and it helps to strengthen your stomach muscles. If you are serious about changing your weight and your lifestyle, then you should start by taking help from a professional. They can help you determine what the right foods are to eat, and the right amount of vitamins you may need. All of these things will help you lose weight. You must concentrate and have a goal in mind, if you are determined to get a flat stomach. Exercises like lunges, crunches and squats help to target more stomach muscles at a time, instead of just one area of the stomach muscle. Doing these exercises will help you to gain more muscles in your stomach, which in turn will help you, burn calories and lose fat. Exercising is a learning process and getting help from someone who knows what they are doing, like a trainer, is always a great idea. This way you will know if you are doing an exercise the wrong way, and it will help to prevent any injuries that can happen to you. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Because the pain in your back has begun to interfere with your life, you finally decided to let the doctor check it out. Once there, she did the usual battery of tests and then sent you for a complete workup; MRI, x-rays and blood work. You had some inkling of bad news, because the pain has been persistent for a few weeks. What’s worse is the numbness and tingling in your left leg. What in the world is going on?
The doctor phones you with the news. She says that the tests revealed degenerative disc disease, a disc bulge and osteoarthritis. Ouch! Now you’re worried. The doctor explains that this is fairly common, especially for people who are obese, sedentary and over 50. As you listen, you realize that you fit this profile. Although your doctor assures you that she will help with prescribing medication to alleviate the pain right now, she also explains that the prescriptions will not be enough. You need to change your lifestyle. She explains that losing the excess weight will help. In addition, strengthening your core musculature will also be preventative medicine. Now you’ve been hit with a double whammy. You’re willing and able to make a change. After all, the pain isn’t something you want to endure every day. However, the question of where to even begin remains a lingering thought. After researching the latest diet and exercise plans online, you come across Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer program. Starting any workout program after being sedentary for years can seem like a daunting task. However, it is important to remember that you can always start right where you are. Even if you cannot fathom the idea of doing exercises for ten minutes, just do what you can. Gradually increase the time to the pace of the workout when you feel able to do so. Your doctor will be happy to monitor your progress. Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer offers a great deal of variety and flexibility. You may choose from among the included exercises; Cardio, Yoga, Abs and Total Body workout DVDs. The program includes nutritional support, so that you can make healthy food choices to speed up your weight loss and get healthier. In addition, Tony’s plan has resistance bands for strength training exercises. There is no need to feel that this program is out of your league. If you make the decision to begin the program and stick with it, you will see results. Your waistline will be trimmer and your strong core will help support you, resulting in fewer back problems. Have you been sucked in by infomercials promising tighter abs, firmer thighs and burning calories fast? Has it made you buy exercise stuff that you put in a closet somewhere, or under the bed and never actually use? Well, you are not alone. There are many people just like you out there, but there is a solution.First, let’s try to remember some of the workout equipment you may have purchased. There are things like the exercise ball, free weights, ab-machine, treadmill, bike, Pilates DVD, jump rope, and the list can continue on and on. The best question to ask is: whether or not those equipments have actually worked and were they worth the money. I’m sure that when you first purchased them you were excited and could not wait to get started. You did all of the exercises and used all of the machines for about 2 weeks and then slow, but surely, you became too busy to use them. Eventually, they ended up somewhere in the house, collecting dust. There are may be many reasons why your workout regime came to a sudden halt, when you were so excited about it at the beginning. You may have become too busy, an unexpected event occurred and you could not continue exercising, or you just gave up. For your health and well-being, it is always best to develop some form of exercise regimen. It will make you a healthier and happier person. Once you make a determination to get back into a routine of exercising, you’ll find that you won’t need a whole lot of equipment, just stick with the basics. Your equipment will still come in handy for you though, once you become a pro at exercising. You’ll find that you can get a lot done, when you start off slowly and work your way up to a more difficult level of exercising over time. And you certainly would not need to spend a lot of money to do it either. You can even exercise in ways that you least expect it, like vacuuming your house, cleaning you car, or gardening. All of the machines you have purchased for exercising have not all been a waste of money, but you will learn that it is all about pacing yourself. Do not try to do too much, all at one time. When exercise becomes a normal way of life for you, you will probably laugh at yourself when you think about all the equipment that was bought and packed away all because you tried to do everything at one time. And after you have laughed about it you will be glad you made exercise a normal way of life for you. Instead of trying out workouts that are unproven and new, why don't you try workouts like the p90x or the 10 minute trainer, which are both proven to work by thousands of people just like you. Most people simply don’t get the nutrients that they require from the food that they eat every day. Even though many people may try to get a good amount of vitamins in their diet, it is very hard to do without sticking purely to natural foods.
Multivitamins provide a means for most people to make up the amount of vitamins which they are missing out on as part of their diet, but there are lots of different types out there and it can be hard to know which one to choose. Buying a multivitamin which is specifically for your gender may help you to ensure that you are better meeting your needs. For example most grocery stores sell separate multivitamins for men and for women and these are not substantially more expensive than the generic pills. Not all companies manufacture these gender-based multivitamins the same however. For example One A Day Women’s multivitamins are not entirely different from One A Day Essential with the exception of increased vitamin D, calcium and iron, all of which are more important in a woman’s diet than a man’s. Multivitamin Marketing Most of the multivitamin companies list a whole host of reasons for which you should pay the extra for men’s or women’s specific multivitamins. For example, women’s multivitamins may be marketed with the added benefits of bone, breast, heart, reproductive system health and also skin benefits. At the same time, men’s multivitamins are touted as being aimed at providing better immunity and higher levels of energy as well as increased prostate, colon and heart health. The Truth So is the marketing right? Experts suggest that you shouldn’t expect any type of multivitamin to act like some kind of wonder drug. The fact is that you cannot guarantee that you won’t have heart problems or get osteoporosis or colon cancer simply by taking a multivitamin every day. What you can do however is to make sure that they vitamins which you are consuming every day is closer to the recommended amount, which in the long run gives you a better chance of good health. Many of the products on the market don’t necessarily match up with the recommended guidelines for men and women, and no multivitamin may be able to exactly match your specific needs. It is best if you are aware of the recommended daily allowances for your specific needs, for example if you are pregnant and know that you need extra folic acid, and then look for that specific product, or a multivitamin which includes higher levels of this vitamin. If you knew that you were going to be rewarded for it, there is no doubt that there would be much more temptation to drop a few pounds or perform a daily blood pressure check. It may be worth your while then to check with either your employer or your health insurer to see, if they offer any kind of incentive for healthy living, as many may actually do so.There are an ever increasing number of employers and health insurers that are choosing to offer incentives for people to lead a healthy lifestyle. Such incentives include treats such as cash, vouchers and prizes such as Nintendo Wii systems. This is aimed at encouraging people to become healthier, and in the long term cost the insurance company less in the amount which is paid out in healthcare costs. The rewards which offered to those improving their lifestyle vary according to the company. For example American Specialty Health in San Diego who provide different wellness programs for a number of large employers such as Aetna and Kaiser Permanente offer such prizes as American Express gift vouchers, Jamba Juice gift cards and a number of others once a member reaches a specified target. Another company, SunRidge Farms, which is a company marketing organic foods, receive an additional $5 bonus in their pay packet on every day that they choose to cycle to work instead of using the car. Even if you don’t remember your company ever specifying that they offer these kind of rewards, it has been suggested that most employees pay far more attention to the penalties which are applied by employer than the rewards which are offered. This means that many people may have simply overlooked the fact that rewards were offered. The best person to ask at your work place about the offer of health benefits is the person that is responsible for employee benefits. Alternatively you could also take a look on the patient section of the Website which is run by your health insurance company. You could also try calling the customer service number on your membership card of your insurance scheme. Even if you find that there are no benefits which are offered by your employer or insurer for the losing a few pounds or cycling to work, you could also investigate the possibility of other perks such as discounted gym membership or weight-loss programs. Many health insurers offer these type of benefits on their Websites, including offers such as discounts for Weight Watchers as well as cut-price visits to acupuncturists and other alternative medicine practitioners. As children, we all loved waking up each morning and riding our bikes all day long with our friends. However, as we got older and were able to drive a car, we all tossed aside our bicycles to enjoy this new experience. As children, we were not aware of the many health benefits that were associated with our riding our bicycles. All we knew was that it was fun and we could have cared less about the benefits.Research studies have shown that cycling can in fact increase your level of fitness while having fun at the same time. Many adults are finding that they can cycle back and forth to work to not only save money, but they are also getting into shape at the same time. Your entire family can benefit from beginning the habit of bicycling every day, while at the same time getting the exercise we need. It is unfortunate that our children are being engulfed by the technology age and staying glued to their video games. Most of our children do not know the freedom that they can experience from riding bicycles. As a parent it is up to you to introduce your children to the great outdoors and pull them away from their televisions, video games, and computers. Their lack of physical exercise, as well as yours, can actually change their fitness levels. It will also create other health issues in our children, as well as in ourselves. Children often copy what they see in their parents. So, if they see you sitting around watching television, drinking sodas and eating chips, then they are bound to follow suit. This will only lead to obesity, stress, heart disease, and other mental and physical health issues. All of us need to improve the way we live our lives by exercising and staying on top of our health. If you were to ride your bicycle daily, then you will be minimizing the chances of you experiencing health issues while improving the quality of your life. The physical benefits outweigh of cycling or any type of exercise, outweigh the reasons for you sitting and watching television. Get serious about your life, as well as your children's lives and spend time outdoors together. And there’s no better way to do this, then cycling outdoors. ![]() Bonus! Guide to Eating Out in Fast Food Chains By Joe Wilkes Fast Food Nation and Super Size MeNo, we haven't lost our minds here at Beachbody®. We don't actually want you to eat fast food. It's terrible for you. It makes you fat. It destabilizes economies and nations. It kills the environment. Read Fast Food Nation. See Super Size Me. If you're really serious about getting or staying in shape, fast food restaurants are not on your path to success. However, sometimes fast food is the only option other than starvation. Long road trips, coworker lunches, the only place your child or childish companion will eat—these are all situations where you may be forced to enter one of these fluorescent dens of gluttony and decide which of their evilly delicious menu items you'll be naming your newly enlarged buttocks. Burger, Fries, Salad, and Iced Tea While the fast food companies have generally shown an appalling disregard for their customers' health, they have lately been shamed by our nation's obesity epidemic into offering some menu items that have some nutritional value. They still can't resist adding a little unneeded fat or extra high-fructose corn syrup just to spice things up, so it's wise to take a buyer-beware approach when ordering your meal. Here are some tips to make healthier choices and some suggestions about the healthiest (relatively speaking) things to order at some of the major fast food chains.
Quick-Look Fast Food Guide All hope isn't lost, though. You can almost find something healthy to eat anywhere. Here are the best bets at some of the most popular fast food chains. (Unless specified, salad calorie counts do not include dressing.) McDonald's
Most misleading item: Chicken Selects® Premium Breast Strips. Premium chicken breast sounds good on the surface, certainly better than the mysterious McNuggets, but the 5-piece version will run you 660 calories (360 from fat!), and that's before you dip them in the sauce! You could eat a Big Mac and get fewer calories, and fewer calories from fat. Burger King
Most misleading item: TENDERCRISP® Chicken Sandwich. At 800 calories, and 46 total grams of fat, don't think you're cutting calories with this batter-fried, mayo-slathered doozy. Wendy's
Most misleading item: Chicken Club Sandwich. You don't want to belong to this "club." At 540 calories, you're better off with the more decadent-sounding, but healthier, Ultimate Chicken Grill. Taco Bell
Most misleading item: Fiesta Taco Salad. At 820 calories, this is the most highly caloric item on Taco Bell's menu. You can shave off over 300 calories by not eating the deep-fried tostada shell it's served in, but still, that's a pretty hefty calorie count for a "salad." Subway
Most misleading item: Meatball Marinara. What's in these meatballs? A 6-inch sub is 560 calories; a 12-inch sub has 1,120 calories; and if you double the meat, you can get a single 12-inch sandwich with 1,920 calories and 84 grams of fat. On the bright side, I believe the defibrillation is complimentary. There are a variety of exercises that you can participate in that will make a difference in how you feel about exercising. There is not an individual alive who does not want to have a body that will not give out on them, nor become tired. We all want our bodies to being able to take long walks on the beach, play a round of golf, or spend the day walking around the mall with friends. When was the last time that you were able to dance all night? When was the last time you ran up a flight of stairs without having to stop to catch your breath? Do you wish you had the body you had when you were younger? I think that all of us have this desire, to not only look great, but feel great as well. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a way you can achieve this type of body once again. Many individuals know the effects of regular exercise will not only have positive effects on them physically, but mentally as well. Great motivations for any individual are feeling healthy and having more energy, which will give you a much more positive outlook. For your body to work correctly and feel better, you should be aware of the four types of exercise. The first type is cardiovascular exercise, which refers to the heart and vascular system of the body. This type of exercise will strengthen as well as improve the conditions of the heart and lungs while focusing on the circulation of blood. Your level of energy and endurance will improve from participating in this type of exercise program. Everyone needs a strong heart so that it will be able to pump oxygen and nutrients that will nourish your body. The second type is strength exercise, which uses either weight or resistance to strengthen your muscles. Two sports that specialize in this type of exercise are bodybuilding and weightlifting. For our bodies to maintain bone density we need to have muscles that are in shape and this type of exercise will be extremely useful/ The third type is balance and coordination exercise, which older people need. Certain types of illness and medication can often affect a person’s coordination negatively, which is not necessarily caused by age. Here, balance and coordination exercise will help. The fourth and final type is flexibility exercise, which aids in helping your body bend and move correctly. This type of exercise also improves the motion range of your joint so that you will be able to move more freely. Yoga and stretching are great ways for you to improve the flexibility of your body so that it moves naturally. Everyone wants a body that looks good, but simply eating less will not help. A body needs to be exercised regularly, in order for it to stay in shape. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Today, many people across the world are turning to exercise as a way to improve their lives by staying healthy. There are many different types of exercises that can help you in your search for a better way of living. This type of workout does not have to long and strenuous periods of exercise as many think. With cardiovascular exercise you are helping your cardiovascular systems, which includes your heart and lungs. When you participate in an aerobic exercise you are increasing the flow of oxygen to your body, which helps these two vital organs as well as your muscles. Other forms of cardiovascular exercise include jogging, swimming, and walking. You should know that not all cardiovascular exercises are equal, because some will burn more, fat than others. The harder you work your muscles, the more fat you will lose, since you are increasing your metabolic rate. This type of training is known as anaerobic exercise and by getting involved with this type of exercise your body will convert oxygen into energy. The benefits from this type of cardiovascular exercise include time, fitness, and metabolism. This type of training can be performed quickly while it improves your cardiovascular system. It also will burn more calories even after you have finished exercising since it has increased your metabolic rate. As a result, you will be burning more fatty tissues. Oftentimes, aerobic training can have a negative effect on an individual's metabolic rate. As a result, the muscle tissue will decrease and your body will become less effective in the fat burning process. It is no secret that by consistently exercising in aerobic workouts, individuals tend to become much more fit, but it does not increase your metabolic rate. Continuous aerobic exercise can cause your body to adapt in such a way that it will be harder for you to see any type of gain from it. However, with anaerobic exercise an individual finds that the workouts do not get any easier. As a result, these individuals continue to see results from the hard work in muscle tone since you are increasing the metabolic rate and burning fat. This type of workout is a good thing. For one, you are getting fitter as you continue seeing better and better results. Secondly, you are making life changing choices that can extend your life. One type of cardiovascular training is participating in interval training, which will also improve the amount of fat you burn. With interval exercise there will be periods when your workout is intense, which are followed by periods when you rest. As a result, you will be more prepared to actively participate at a much higher intensity for longer periods of time. With this type of training you need to be sure that the ratio between work and rest periods is equal. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Who stands at a higher risk of premature death, a smoker or an obese person? One is a habit and another is a medical condition. If you are obese and you think that you are better off than a smoker, here’s something to think about.
Extensive research done by a Swedish team reveals something mind blowing: obesity, rather than smoking, puts you at a higher risk of premature death. For that matter, being underweight also puts a person at a high risk. The studies were based on military conscription data of about 46 thousand men. After keeping track of their height, weight and smoking habits the data of 3 thousand men who died at a later stage was analyzed. Based on the above data, it was concluded that obese people (BMI of 30 and above) who did not smoke carried the same risk as obese people who smoked about 10 cigarettes a day. Men of normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9) lived comparatively longer. Also, underweight men (BMI of 17 and below) ran the same risk of premature death as obese people. It was also concluded that being obese during the teenage years doubled the risk of premature death. Therefore dealing with obesity early in life (and not to mention throughout life) can increase life span and assure a healthy life. Always use a BMI calculator to find out if your weight is on the healthier side or not. If not, start working on losing the extra weight at the earliest. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, start on an exercise plan. Begin with 30 minutes three times a week and increase it to daily. At the same time maintain healthy eating habits. Avoid crash dieting courses; rather implement a steady diet plan by including enough servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Avoid high calorie foods and above all, move towards a healthy eating habit. If your loved one is obese or is a smoker, you need to urge him or her to take some action towards reducing the health risks and the risk of premature death that comes with obesity and smoking. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X Most parents feel proud when their children gain weight, and look at it as a sign of being healthy. Little do they know about the consequences that their children will have to face as a result of this. That very “puppy fat,” as it is called, becomes a major cause of concern in adolescence and adulthood. If your child is “plump,” it may be the very first sign that he is on the way to a lifetime of obesity.BMI as an indicator Since “fatness” is a relative term, Body Mass Index (BMI) is a good indicator of whether your child is overweight or not. BMI is a universally accepted measure that compares an individual’s height and weight and indicates, whether the person is overweight or obese. A child with a BMI of 25 or above is considered to be overweight, but a child with a BMI of 30 and above is considered to be obese. Effects on Health If you accept your child’s obesity as temporary or normal, you may be setting him or her up for a future of health problems. Obesity puts your child at the risk of high blood pressure as the heart has to work harder. High cholesterol, in addition to hypertension can lead to heart diseases. Children who are obese are at a high risk of Type 2 diabetes. Also, since the weight-bearing joints have to bear excess weight it could lead to arthritis and mobility problems. Psycho-social Effects Although physical problems may take time to develop, obese children suffer more on the psycho-social front. “Fatness” is not accepted in society, and obese children are often ostracized by peers. As a result they may develop a low self-esteem, a poor self-image and depression. They may lack confidence and may not achieve their goals in life. All this compounds the weight problem, as psychologically disturbed children tend to turn to food as a source of comfort. The major causes of obesity in children are lack of exercise and lack of a proper diet. Poor lifestyle habits such as watching too much TV also leads to overeating and weight gain. As a parent, you must act now and help your child adapt to an active lifestyle and the right eating habits. If you’re finding it difficult to get your kids to exercise and be active, entice them with programs like Shaun Ts Fit Kids Club. Such workout DVD’s are a fun way to get kids to work out. Why do we drink soda? Well, there are several reasons for this beverage choice. They taste good and they are available pretty much everywhere you go. Think for a moment what vending machines are full of, soda. They are in the check out lines at several stores, and convenience stations are packed with these sugary drinks. If there are so many soda choices available, are they good for you?Soft drinks have a big punch, on your waistline that is. If you are on a diet and fitness program, soft drinks are not your friend. A regular soft drink can have anywhere from 120 calories to over 300 calories, depending on the brand. If you are on a 1200 calorie per day diet, a couple of those soft drinks can really throw you off track. It is easy to forget about them because they are not actually food, but drinks count too. Aside from the added calories, soft drinks have other disadvantages. Soda is full of empty calories. It contains no nutritional value, and is very addictive. Soft drinks contain tons of caffeine and sugar, both of which are addictive. The caffeine speeds up the heart rate and gives you instant energy, but also causes a “slump” when it is gone. The sugar in soft drinks is also addictive because it too can give you a false high. When all of that sugar enters the body at one time, it gives you energy, but once it is gone you are left feeling just as, if not more, sluggish than before. Soft drink consumption can also lead to poor digestion. This can include indigestion and bloating. For those of you who are watching your weight, you know what bloating can do for you. By far the best choice for a beverage is water. Leave the colas on the shelves and go for a healthier option, your body will thank you. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

While there are still many who do pushups the traditional way, several fitness enthusiasts have already discovered the great benefit provided by the use of push up stands. You have probably noticed some people who elevate their feet while doing the push-ups to improve arm strength. Raising the level of the feet shifts most of the weight for the arms to carry and thus provides a better workout for your arm muscles.
Raising the level of the hands, on the other hand, targets a different muscle group. Push up stands are the tools you can use to elevate the hands while doing the push ups. In conventional push-ups, the level of your hands, which corresponds to the level of the ground, serves as the limit to which you can push your body down. The stands, however, allow you to position your body even beyond the level of your hands. This provides more resistance and thus, better workout for your chest. Aside from that, it also stretches the arm muscles as you go further down. Choosing the Best Push-up Stands Making the choice of using push-up stands is the first step towards a stronger upper body. Deciding which push-up stand to purchase and use is another crucial step. To fully enjoy the benefits of using stands, it is best to keep a few tips in mind.
You can always go with what you have been used to doing – traditional workouts and all. However, if you want to see significant improvements in your body, you would find that the use of push-up stands is actually a great addition to your strength training. Resistance stretching is a combination of flexibility and strength training. Resistance stretching provides permanent flexibility, while at the same time taking the pain out of stretching and preventing you from overstretching. Research has proven that the combination of contracting and stretching muscles is one of the best methods of enhancing flexibility. How it works. Resistance stretching works the muscles through constant movement. Instead of holding a normal stretch, this type of exercise focuses on flexing the muscle while stretching it. For instance, while practicing a leg lift, rather then let it fall as you normally would, focus on resisting the motion while you lower the leg. So how do you do it? Resistance stretching requires little equipment. Basically all you need is a matt, you may also want to use a towel, bands, or another person. One exercise you may want to try is: Quads at Wall – This stretch focuses on your hip flexors and quads. Start out by getting on you hands and knees with your feet facing a wall. Raise one leg behind you with your toes pointing upwards. Lower the knee to the floor about four inches away from the wall, and rest your foot on the wall. Next, move the front leg into a lunge position, making sure to keep your knee over the ankle. Next, press your foot into the wall to stretch the muscles in the front of the leg. At the same time use your front leg to push your body back to stretch the back leg. Return to the starting position and repeat. We all know that stretching is a very important part of any fitness routine. Resistance stretching may not seem like a very strenuous exercise, but you will definitely be able to feel the results of these exercises the next day. Many people start an exercise routine with the hopes of getting in shape, but when they do not see quick results, it is easy to give up. How can you make sure you stay on track and make exercise a habit rather than a duty? There are several things you can do to make sure you stay on track, and become a fitness veteran.1. Select activities that you like. Let’s face it; if you do not like your exercise routine, you are not likely to stick with it. Make a list of all the activities that you enjoy, and make your selection from that list. 2. Make it a priority. Add your exercise time to your “must do today” list, rather than your “would like to do today” list. Once you set exercise as a priority, you will not be as likely to skip it. 3. Exercise as soon as you wake up. At night, lay out your exercise clothes so when you wake up in the morning they are ready for you. Get up, and get going with your exercise routine. Early exercise has many benefits. You will feel more energized throughout the day, and feel better about yourself. 4. Keep Track. Make a fitness journal and keep track of what you do. If you know you will have to write it down, you will be more likely to do it. Also keep track of your progress; it is easy to stay motivated if you can see how well you are doing. 5. Get a Reward. Reward yourself for a job well done. Setting a goal with a reward at the end is a great way to stay motivated. These are just a few of the ways for you to turn your fitness routine into a habit. Get creative and find a way that works best for you. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X |
