Hey, I just wanted to send out an early reminder that day light savings time is a week from today.Yep next Saturday you are going to need to move your clocks ahead 1 hour. It is actually next Sunday, but the time change happens at 2:00am so most people take care of it on Saturday. For those of you who do not partake in daylight savings, you should probably just do nothing... Yep nothing. I gotta be honest with you all about daylight savings. This day is in my top three days of the year. I LOVE IT! Now the only negative there is about next Saturday is that you lose an hour of sleep, BUT... gaining an extra hour of daylight is the greatest thing in the world. I love having as much daylight as possible. Where I live in the winter it gets dark as early as 4:30 pm. Sometimes I go to work when it is dark and come home when it is dark, but in the summer it stays light until close to 10pm for a while. I love that. I am going to celebrate this wonderful day by going on a few hikes and getting my mountain bike out for the first time this year. Anyway this is your first reminder of daylight savings. It is Friday and it is finally sunny here in the great state of Washington. Here in WA, more precisely Seattle, we do not get a whole lot of sunny weather. Especially this time of year. So when the sun comes out people flock outside. And that is exactly what I am going to do today.I am heading out to a local climb here in the area called Poo Poo Point. It is known as one of the best hang-gliding and para-gliding locations in the nation. It is a pretty easy 2 mile hike up to a gorgeous few of the Issaquah valley. If you get lucky you can actually watch some guys jump of the hill with their parachutes on. I'm looking forward to just getting outside and enjoying the nice whether. I decided not to do an extreme climb today, because this will be my first time out this year, that is the weathers fault, but it should be beautiful. I have some big plans this summer, one to hike the Enchantments again(did that for the first time last year), and perhaps to a few day 30-40 mile backpack trip through Yellowstone. Hopefully I can make that one happen. So I've been doing my 10 minute trainer daily exercises, going to start the chalean extreme here really soon, but I am looking forward to getting outside to exercise. So enough typing on this here computer. I am going OUTSIDE! If it is sunny where you live then I hope that you will join me in an outdoor activity this weekend. - Nick
Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X ![]() By Joe Wilkes The big news in nutrition this past week was a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The study covered cookbook recipes over the last several decades (with emphasis on recipes in The Joy of Cooking), and it was discovered that calorie counts have gone up dramatically as authors have increased portion sizes to conform to new cultural norms. Where the 1936 edition of the kitchen classic averaged 268 calories per serving, the most recent 2006 edition averaged 384 calories. Lower costs of food and larger plate sizes are theorized as part of the reason for the increase, but nutritionist Marion Nestle says that mainly it's just a reflection of people becoming accustomed to eating more and more overall. What can we do to monitor and control portion sizes? Here are some ideas . . . Small Portion of Food, Water, and Food Storage Containers
It's definitely too much of a hassle to weigh and measure everything you put in your body every day. Even the most anal-retentive people among us don't have the time to be hauling out the scale and measuring cups for every meal. But it's worth it to at least familiarize yourself with a few standard weights and measures. Try learning what an ounce, a gram, and a tablespoon, etc., look like. That way you can at least eyeball how much you're eating. I've yet to meet the person who can make a typical bag of potato chips last for twelve servings. Handy Portion-Control Guide By Debbie Siebers, creator of Slim in 6 To achieve weight loss, it's crucial to really understand what a portion is. Here's a trick: use your hand as a guideline to portion sizes. Palm = Proteins Make protein portions the size of your palm. Protein is found in animal products, like fish, meats, and cottage cheese. Some veggie sources include legumes (beans, etc.), tofu, tempeh, and wheat glutens. Thumb = Fats Fats are important but also very dense, so match portions to the size of your thumb. Good fat sources are avocados, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. Fist = Fruits, Grains, etc. Your bread, fruit, cereal, rice, and grain portions should be about equal to the size of your closed fist. Remember that whole grains are always preferred. Hand = Veggies Open your hand and spread your fingers as wide as you can. That is a good vegetable portion. Raw vegetables are loaded with fiber and nutrients, and contain very few calories. This is a gadget that can not only measure how far you have walked, but also how many calories you have burned. Some of the pedometers that are on the market today also will monitor the heart rate of the person using them. This can be beneficial when using the instrument to lose weight. Walking, speed walking, jogging and running are all excellent forms of cardiovascular exercise that work well to burn off calories. These activities can be performed just about anywhere that there is wide open space. What is more, these are all free activities as you can walk outside without having to pay gym fees. The trouble with using this form of exercise is that it can be hard to figure out how far you have walked or how many calories you have burned. When you are working out, it is always good to have a goal in mind, or a carrot to chase, so to speak. The pedometer gives you that goal. You can use it on a daily basis to see your progress. It is a good idea to push yourself a little bit more each day when you are exercising so that you can continue to pursue your goal. By using a pedometer, you can have an idea of how far you are going each day as well as how many calories you are burning off. In addition to using the pedometer when you are out walking and running, you can also use it when you are using a treadmill. While most treadmills will give you this information on a computerized screen, if you have a treadmill that does not give you the information that you need to keep you in your regimen. You can also use the pedometer if you are walking during an outing. It can be a good way to tell you how many calories you have burned off during a day at the zoo or the museum. If you want to know how many miles you have walked or run, or how many calories you have burned, you should invest in a pedometer. This can be a valuable tool when you are trying to stay in shape. Have you ever seen an interview with like a 105 year old man that says, "Yeah I've been smoking for 75 years, and have only eaten 3 salads in the last decade. And there ain't a single thing wrong with me."I'm thinking WHAT!? How do people get so lucky in life? (Cause those type of people are out there.) Here is someone that didn't take the best care of their body, didn't eat right, smoked, probably didn't exercise a whole lot, and here they are over 100 years old with no major health issues. Well I am here to tell you today that that person is the EXCEPTION. Long life, and more importantly, a healthy life is not something that just lands in your lap. You need to take care of your body in order to help it work correctly for a long time. Like a well taken care of car. A healthy diet, and a consistent exercise regiment is probably the most effective and most important practical thing you can do in your life to extend it and live it in good health. It is never to late to start. There are 40, 50, and 60 year old men and women that have cut the pounds and got into the best shape of their life. So no matter what age you are, start eating healthy, exercise regularly and your future will be bright and long. The 10 Minute Trainer by Tony Horton is an incredible daily exercise that only takes 10 minutes. If you have a little more time on your hands try the PX90 or the chalean extreme. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X If you want to lose weight, you need to get your heart pumping and the fat burning. Cardiovascular exercises are the best way to burn off fat. But you should be in good health before you begin any cardiovascular exercise routine. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor whenever you start an exercise routine to make sure you are healthy enough for this exertion. Most doctors applaud the idea of cardiovascular exercise as it not only helps the body, but the heart. Walking, running, jogging, rowing, stair stepping and elliptical exercises are all examples of cardiovascular exercises. So are aerobic workouts. The type of cardiovascular exercise that you choose depends upon your personal likes and dislikes for the type of exercise as well as your overall health. If you are overweight and have a difficult time with exercise, you are better off to start with a low impact cardiovascular exercise such as walking or elliptical. If you want to burn calories quickly, you can use a more intense and high impact cardiovascular exercise. Whenever you start out with a cardiovascular exercise routine, be sure to start out slowly. If you feel pain or shortness of breath, stop. You should also take your heart rate when you are exercising in this manner. Many cardiovascular machines will not only measure the heart rate, but they will also tell you how much you have walked, climbed or traveled as well as how many calories you have burned. By starting a cardiovascular exercise routine, you will start to see the weight come off as you burn off fat. When you combine this type of exercise routine with a sensible diet, you will start to see a dramatic change in not only your weight, but your overall health. You will have more energy and be in better overall health. Cardiovascular exercise will get your heart pumping and will give you energy. Be sure not to exercise in this manner before bedtime as you will have a difficult time falling asleep. You should also weight a half hour after eating before exercising. The best time to perform cardiovascular exercises is in the morning. This will get you charged up for the day, get your metabolism going and allow you to burn off calories as well as give you energy. Sometimes goal setting can be a difficult task. Especially if you are just starting and have nothing to measure or compare to past experiences. You can set one goal, or set a series of goals.Typically I like to set a series of goals with rewards, that I believe will lead me to my biggest goal. And here is the the deal with the smaller goals. I set them in a way that eventually they WILL happen, its just a matter of my hard work whether it happens sooner or later. Here is an example. Say your big goal was to lose 20 pounds. My First goal would be to lose 5 pounds. That's it, that is my goal number 1, and after that goal I have a reward set for myself to keep me motivated. Now I know in order to reach goal number 1 I need a plan. The plan is the step by step and day by day activities I set in order to reach goal number 1. Now it may take me a week to hit my first goal of losing 5 pounds, or it may take me three weeks. It is really up to how hard I work, but I will eventually reach that goal. My next goal would be to keep that 5 pounds off for 2 weeks. Again a goal that has an end, but now forces me to continue the things that got me to my first goal. If I continue to lose weight than that is great, that pores into my 3rd goal of 5 more pounds. It is okay if the goals overlap, because if you keep the first 5 pounds off for 2 weeks but also lose 5 more pounds, then you achieved both. Eventually all my small goals would lead to my larger goal of losing the whole 20 pounds. And a long the way there are rewards for every goal met. Rewarding yourself is GOOD. Do not feel guilty about it, humans need all the motivation they can get and sometimes a small reward is great. Now if you are trying to lose weight you may want to make your reward something other then sweets. It can be anything from a pair of pants, to food, to a night out with friends. Be creative with it. So go out and set some small goals to get you to your big goals. If you need an incredible daily trainer workout video, try Tony Hortons 10 Minute Trainer. Does anyone else watch this show? I know, I know, millions of people watch the show, but they should.
This is a great show. It is extremely motivating and touching. It is amazing to watch these overweight people transform into fit individuals. I gotta be honest with you, sometimes it is hard for me to see the person inside the person. But this show makes it possible to see. ![]() See what I mean. That person on the left was hidden somewhere inside the person on the right. All it took was some hard work and sticktoitness (I know that's not a word but it works here.) Now when you have the training and the the focus from these two... ![]() ... it may be a little easier to stick to it, BUT this does not mean you NEED these two. This transformation is possible for anyone that puts there mind to it and does not give up. If you need help, then get a friend to stay accountable with, or hire a personal trainer. Your health and life is worth the money. Cancel cable TV to pay for your trainer if you need to. The investment will be worth it and as the biggest loser shows... IT IS POSSIBLE! We know what you are thinking. You have your children running with you when you go out jogging or you have them eating better, and working out with you at the swimming pool. Although these are great ways to get kids started you have to remember that they kids. There will be days that neither you nor the kids want to go out to the gym and when this happens what can you do?Many parents are finding that using workout videos at home are working a lot better than any other method. One of the reasons this works is because kids are responsive to those types of fitness programs that are active. They like to be up and jumping around. They also are less resistant to workouts, if they do not feel like workouts. One way to entice them is by getting workout videos that are geared towards them and their energy. Recently many people are turning to Shaun T's Fit Kids Club. This is a fitness program that was designed specifically for kids and they love it. The nice feature about this particular workout program is that is geared for kids. It is not just an adult program that is labeled for children. Because of this the music is fast paced and fun and kids get to learn basic dance moves. When the video is made specifically for children it can help boost their self-esteem. The video gives them the types of moves they can do and they are not bored with trying to follow a video that was geared only for adults. With Shaun's Fit Kids Club he motivates children to want to dance and move. He has danced with famous stars like Nick and Aaron Carter and Mariah Carey. Because he is both a dancer and a choreographer himself he understands what children need and how to get them moving. With Shaun T's program the kids will feel more like they are at a party than they are working out; they may even ask their friends to join. He also starts children on the video which helps your kids get involved. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X If you find that you have a hard time keeping up a normal exercise routine by yourself, or perhaps you just do not like working out by yourself, you should try finding a workout partner. For years I would only workout with my friend Derek. We had a great routine that we did 3 or 4 times a week and I found that it helped keep me accountable to working out. Working out with him was effective and fun. We hardly missed any workouts because one of us was always motivated if the other was not. Only if we were sick did we skip. Plus it was fun, we had someone to hang out with and talk with while we were working out. While some workouts do not give room for conversation, most do. In fact a lot of Olympians say that they train at conversation pace. Even if you do not workout at a gym then you can still have a workout partner help keep you motivated and push you to go further. In a few weeks I am going to be starting the ChaLean Extreme workout. I am going to be going through this workout video with another friend of mine. I am looking forward to it and I will post more about it as I do it. So if you need a little extra motivation or want to have someone help push you to be stronger and better, then try finding a workout partner. To me it is much more fun to workout with someone. When you are doing free weights or interval training you may have a need to do pushups. It can be difficult to gauge your workout if you are pushing up directly from the floor. Instead try power stands because they can give a more fluid movement as you work with them. There are different types of power stands that you can choose from. Tony Horton has designed one that many people like because it is balanced and it is constructed from heavy-duty metal. They are able to withstand extreme workouts so you don't have to worry about hurting yourself. These come in both the old and new styles. Power stands also put the strain of the workout on the power stands instead of on your body so your wrists and hands have less of a chance of being injured. They also give you a no-skid surface so that you can do as many pushups as you need to without worry about skidding. Why Use Power Stands? Besides the things we have mentioned thus far a power stand will also give you the flexibility when you workout. As you raise your body from the bars in a pushup your body flows evenly up and down. You can rest on the bars but still be in a perfectly symmetrical position. This will enhance your body's fluid movement so that you can get more power into your pushup; you will also do them faster because you are more stable. Power stands push up barsare also a good idea because of their storage feature. You can store them in a living room or basement in a smaller area than some equipment. If you create your own home gym you don't have to worry about dragging them out all the time because they can have their own corner. Difference Between Push Up Stands and Power Stands The power stands are sturdier and more comfortable than regular push up stands. The way that they are made gives them a slight angle. This allows your hands to grip it easier and promotes a more compact way for you to add intensity as you increase your endurance in your pushups. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X ![]() What time of day do you workout? Do you have a favorite time of day? Have you even tried other times, or are you set in your ways? For some people the time they work out is the only time they have time to workout, but what about for the rest of us? What makes you workout when you do, and could it be more effective if you workout out at some other time. Here is what I have found in my own life. I used to workout out at one specific time everyday. 7:30 am. That's it, no ifs ands or buts about it. If I didn't feel like working out at that time I did it anyway. I thought that just working out was enough. What I soon came to realize is that sometimes at 7:30 am I did not have the energy to workout. Then when I worked out I did not give everything I could because I did have the energy to do it. I am the type of guy that likes to get everything out of working out when I do it. I think 1 great workout is better then 2 mediocre workouts. I thought to myself, "I am wasting this time if I do not have the energy I need." So what did I do? I kept my 7:30 time for normal workouts, but when I did not have the energy to work out strong, I would skip the workout in the morning and wait until I felt better later on in the day to work out to the max. Sometimes if I have an entire off day then I'll take the whole day off and prepare for the following day. Sometimes our body needs those mental breaks too. When I was going through the p90x exercise, I used this philosophy and I never felt so good going through any workout, and I maximized every single workout I did in that program. Now it took me more then 90 days to complete... 101 days to be exact, but I think completing it in 101 days, with the few days off here and there, instead of in 90 days but slacking off in some of the workouts was more efficient. If you chalean extreme exercise, or the 10 minute trainer by Tony Horton, then you ought to try this system out. - Nick Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

To many people getting in shape is something they can never see happening. This is especially true for people that are overweight. This is one of the reasons why I love watching The Biggest Loser on TV. It helps me be able to see the person inside the person.
I'll be honest with you, it is sometimes hard for me to believe that I'll see results when I start a fitness program, and I am in the fitness industry as a living. Sometimes it is a hard thing to do if you look in the mirror, when you are 50 pounds overweight, and see the person you can be. That fit, healthy person is there, you just gotta believe. But more then just believing you need to just do it. Start working out today. Take it day by day. Do NOT look at the scale everyday. If you notice on the Biggest Loser they only weigh the contestants one time every week. That is so that they give themselves time to produce some results. If you weight yourself everyday, then you can get discouraged real quick if it takes 6 days to start losing the pounds. Set goals for yourself and stick to them. In reality when someone is not in shape, but wants to be it is not a fitness problem. It is a discipline problem. Its true that it is not that hard to get in shape, all you have to do is do it. ![]() a + b = c Discipline + Exercise = In Shape - Nick Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X Everyone has heard about them, and many people are using meal replacements. They come in protein shakes, power bars, protein powders and they are supposed to take the place of a meal. Many busy people love them because they don't have to cook and they don't have to think about what they are going to eat; they already know and have planned for it.We get many questions about which ones are the best and how to choose one that is right for a person's needs. If you are thinking about using or already using meal replacements it is a good idea to know more about what you are using. Types of Meal Replacements The type that you choose will depend on what you like in general. If you like to munch on something a protein bar will be your best choice. If you like drinking something that tastes like a milkshake; then either the protein powder or protein shake will be your best bet. The difference between the two is that the protein shake is already made up and will be a little more costly than the powder that you makeup yourself. The protein power usually comes in a tub and will contain about 24-8 oz servings. How Will You Use Them? Most people use a meal replacement to gain weight or lose weight. You will want to make this decision before you buy them because each type is different. In most cases you can use a meal replacement to replace one or two meals depending on your circumstances; it is not wise to use them for all three meals all the time. Be Sure To Read the Label You must read the label so that you get the most out of the protein meal replacement. Before you use any make sure that they are going to give you the supplements you need. There are several reviews of the top kind’s with most people saying that the EAS and the Myoplex brands work very well. Statistics show that American children are struggling with obesity like many adults. In fact, between 16 and 33% of children are having problems with weight and it is a difficult situation to treat. When you are working with an obese child it can be difficult for them to get up and start moving.
One of the ways to introduce them to workouts is by giving them something to do that is fun. Many parents try getting their children involved in sports or try to enforce some type of program on the child that they do not like. A more effective method is to buy a few kids workout videos. Today, children need to be engaged in something fun in order for them to work out. If you notice some children are always playing outdoors and the play will involve running, skipping and jumping. Kids naturally are active except when they are allowed to sit in front of a television or computer. Since this is their natural way of being it is a great idea to get them started with a fun video that will have them doing the things they like to do. Why kids videos? When you think about it there are thousands of videos around that are geared towards many different age levels. This means that adults get to chose as many types of videos as they want. Often they will choose adult workout videos and have their children join in. Children do not have the same strengths or the same fitness coordination as adults and most kids videos take this into consideration. Types of kids videos You can find many different types of videos. As an example, Shaun's Fit Kids Club is an excellent total body workout. Shaun has a way with engaging children easily and there are kids that are doing the workout on the video. The music is hip-hop and everyone is working out by learning some simple dance moves. There are videos to teach children yoga and those that are jump rope routines. One way that many people are choosing to exercise and stay in shape is to use video or DVD to help them not only get motivated but also to exercise correctly. Most of us want to stay in shape, but have a difficult time getting into the routine of daily exercise. Watching a workout video can be fun and can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. In addition to being a good way to stay motivated, the workout video or DVD can also help you exercise the right way. You do not have to worry about overdoing it when you use an exercise program to help you when it comes to working out. As long as you are in reasonably good health, there should be no reason why you cannot use these programs. You also do not have to worry about working out improperly. Many people who get hurt when they are working out do so because they have performed an incorrect move or have not exercised in the right way. When you workout with video, you can learn how to exercise correctly so that you can get the results that you want. You also have the timing right when you workout with video. If you are wondering how much you should workout and are worried about exercising too little or too much, then a video can help you. If you are the type who gives up easily, the video can give you the little push that you need to get to the next level of your workout routine. Working out should be something that you look forward to doing. It has to be a habit in order to be effective - it is not something that you should pick up and put down. The best way to get into the habit of working out is to use an exercise video or DVD to help you along. You will find that although you may have difficulty the first time you try the workout video in completing all of the exercises, your stamina will increase and soon you will be flying through the routine. Once you get into the habit of working out regularly, you are all set to get into better shape and stay there. ChaLEAN Extreme - P90X - P90X Plus - Power 90 Workout - 10 Minute Trainer - Shaun T - Ab Workout - Turbo Jam Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X An elliptical trainer is a great way to get a low impact workout. If you have never used one of these trainers before, you are in for a treat. The elliptical trainer mimics the same movements that are used in cross country skiing, which is one of the best activities you can do to keep in shape. You can use an elliptical trainer at the gym or at home. There are several models that you can choose for home use. The trick to getting fit when using the elliptical trainer is that you have to actually use it. Many people buy exercise equipment that winds up getting used as a clothes hanger or catchall, but not for exercise. But if you use the elliptical trainer on a daily basis, you can not only get your body better toned and in shape, but you can also lose weight. When you want to lose weight as well as tone your body, the elliptical trainer is your best bet when it comes to exercise equipment. Because it is low impact, it is easy on the knees and back. You can also exercise both your lower and upper body using this piece of equipment. You glide back and forth when using this machine and can set the tension level for the machine according to your abilities. When you first use this machine, chances are that you will want to set the level low so that you get used to the machine. One you are used to working out using the elliptical trainer, you can adjust the tension gradually to give yourself a good workout. Do not overdo it the first time on the machine. You may want to push yourself a little, but not to the point where you feel pain. Every time you use the machine, you will notice your stamina increasing. Soon you will be using the machine for longer periods of time and getting increasingly fit. You will notice the impact that this machine has on your body after a week or two of using it as your muscles seem more toned and fit and you actually begin to lose weight. Start out slow, work your way into the routine and use the elliptical machine every day and you will get the body that you want. But you probably also lament that you do not have the time to exercise. Most of us are all stressed out and tend to stretch ourselves to the limit. We eat on the run, do not eat healthy meals and have little time for exercise. There are some tips that you can use to get into shape that will not impede too much upon your life. One way to get a little bit more exercise each day is to avoid looking for the closest parking spot to a store or at work. Look for a far parking spot so that you will be forced to walk a little further. This may seem like just a little thing, but it can help you get in shape. Walking is a cardiovascular exercise that can help you lose weight. The trouble is that most people do not walk enough and vie for the closest parking spot to wherever they happen to be going, including the gym. By parking a bit further away, you are forcing yourself to exercise. Another way that you can get some exercise in your every day life is to take the stairs. While this may be impossible if you work on the 92nd floor of a building, if you work on the 4th floor, it is not a bad idea. Walking up and down the stairs each day instead of taking an elevator is a good way to stay in shape. Speaking of stairs, if you have stairs in your home or apartment, use them. Make it a habit to go up and down the stairs a few times a day to stay in shape. Stair stepping is another cardiovascular exercise that can help you lose weight. Skip cream and sugar in your tea or coffee and switch to water instead of soft drinks and you will also see a difference when it comes to your weight. Try to drink 8 glasses of water each day. It will not only raise your metabolism, but it will help you burn calories and keep you away from snacking. These may seem like little tips as they do not cause you to go out of your way much, but they can add up to you losing weight and getting into better shape. You have probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After hearing that, you probably then skipped breakfast and ate fast food for lunch, right? After all, who has time for breakfast? The idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is not just an old adage, it is a truth. Eating a good breakfast in the morning gets your metabolism going and enables you to burn fat throughout the day, when you can burn more calories. Many people today skip breakfast and eat some sort of lunch, although it may not be a nutritious lunch. They view dinner as their big meal, where they tend to eat the most. After dinner is often TV time, when they snack. This is the unhealthy eating habits that most Americans have developed. It is no wonder that we have a huge problem with obesity in this country. When you eat breakfast, you give your metabolism a wake up call. While you were sleeping, your metabolism slows down considerably. You are, in effect, fasting when you sleep. When you get up in the morning, you need to break the fast so that you can get your fat burning, energy building metabolism going again. This will help you burn calories and digest food better throughout the day. Eating a big meal at night is not a good idea because you do not give your body sufficient time to burn off the calories from the meal. This is especially true if you are sedentary after dinner, as is the case with a great deal of people. By switching your eating habits, having your largest meal in the morning and eating a smaller meal at night, you can consume the same number of calories per day, but still lose weight. This is because your metabolism will be busy burning calories during the day that you consume. If you want to lose weight as well as maintain good health, start eating a good breakfast in the morning, have a smaller dinner and avoid eating snacks before going to bed. You will start to notice a difference in your body as well as your energy level in a week. People are often all fired up to get into shape at the beginning of the year and go to the gym regularly. By March, they are tapering off going to the gym. In the summer, the gyms are often empty. Many people let their memberships lapse because they just get out of the habit of going to the gym. Exercise has to become a habit in order to work. If you make it a priority in your life, it will become a positive part of your life. Not only will it enable you to stay in good physical shape, but it is also good for you mentally as well. But in order for it to work, you have to do it on a regular basis. You have to get into the gym habit in order for your membership to do you any good. Consider exercise as an investment in your health. If a doctor told you that you had to take a pill every day to stay alive, you would make sure that you took that pill. You would even go out of your way to take the pill and make sure that it was a daily part of your life. You have to treat exercise the same way. Look at it as an investment in your health. Make it a routine just like going to work or taking a shower. These are necessary parts of your day, as should exercise. Exercise is one of the best things that you can do for your body and your mind. It not only keeps you looking good, but it boosts your endorphins and helps you feel good. It gives you energy, keeps you from depression and can even keep you from developing certain diseases. It is an solid investment in you and your health. Just as you would not just stop going to work one day, you should not just stop going to the gym. Make the gym a necessary part of your life, give it the priority that it deserves and you will develop an exercise habit that will benefit you for the rest of your life. Ohoooom. You no doubt have used these sounds at one time or another to start meditation. The thing about meditation is that you have to be in the mood for it, and if you are not it goes by the wayside. Meditation is also something that most people think you have to sit still for which is difficult in our fast paced world. One way to combine meditation and movement is to do Yoga. This is not the fancy one where you need to be a contortionist in order to do it, but the type that has you breathing and assuming certain easy positions to calm your spirit. Yoga is a great way to start or end a day. You can find yoga DVDs that will be soothing and relaxing. You don’t have to go to a gym or a yoga class unless you want to do so. One of the ways to use yoga is to learn to breathe. Your breath is always circulating through your system but it doesn’t mean you are getting enough oxygen. Yoga teaches you to breathe properly so that you are getting all the oxygen you need to circulate through your system. As this begins to happen your cells receive more oxygen and you gain a healthier way of being. Breathing also helps you relax and relieve stress. To do Yoga well, it is a great idea to purchase a yoga mat so that you don't have to worry about slipping in your space at home while you are learning to stretch and gain flexibility. This can help you feel more secure as you start to go through a Yoga routine. Yoga is a great way to start getting your body ready for other types of exercise and it can be great to do on days when you aren't doing strength training. ![]() There are hundreds of thousands of diet books on the market and millions of diet tips to lose weight. There are also thousands of so-called magic pills and diet aids that are out there that promise to allow you to continue your same pattern of unhealthy eating and no exercise but still lose weight. Despite the fact that medical science has come a long way when it comes to discovering cures for diseases and conditions, there is no magic cure for being overweight. If you want to lose weight, you have to cut your calories and increase your activity level. If you do this, you will get the results that you want. If you continue on the same pattern of unhealthy eating and no exercise, you are not going to lose weight no matter how many gadgets you buy, how many pills you take or how many other gimmicks you may try. You are merely chasing your tail and wasting your money. If you want to lose weight, you have to exercise as well as diet. Both go hand in hand. Dieting without exercise is a complete waste of time. And if you care enough about yourself to exercise, then you should watch what you eat. By increasing your daily activity with exercise, you will start to notice results almost immediately. You will have more energy and feel better about yourself. It can be difficult to get into the exercise habit because it is a change from your regular routine. But once you get yourself into this habit and begin to exercise regularly, you will come to look forward to this activity as it will give you both a physical and mental boost. Dieting is merely eating less calories. Take a look at a calorie chart and see how many calories you need to consume, as per your height, age, sex and lifestyle, and cut it by 200 per day. You will lose weight. By being conscious of the calories that you are consuming and making healthy choices when it comes to food, you will lose weight. Watch what you drink, too. You might be able to lose weight simply by switching to water. Avoid sweet drinks and alcohol when on a diet as they offer no nutritional value but hang around as fat. By combining smart eating choices, cutting your daily calorie intake and increasing your physical activity with exercise, you will lose weight. Exercise and diet combined is an old concept, but it still is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. This means limit or avoid cookies, cake, sweets, candy and other sugary treats that add nothing to your body by way of nutrition but are processed quickly into glucose and fat. If you just cut down on the sugar, you will notice a change in your body and will start to lose weight. A great deal of people today struggle with weight issues. Obesity and diabetes seem to be at epidemic proportions in the United States. If you want to avoid both, you can start by avoiding simple carbohydrates. You have probably heard that simple carbohydrates are nothing but empty calories. This is true. They offer you nothing but end up sticking to you in ways that you do not need. Not only do simple carbohydrates come in food form, but also as liquids. Soda is one of the prime culprits when it comes to obesity. Soda is nothing but liquid candy and should be avoided. So called health juices and drinks that are loaded with sugar should also be avoided as well. Switch to water and you will notice a difference. There are people who lose weight simply by changing their drinking habits. If you take your tea or coffee with sugar, stop and start drinking it black. This alone can cause you to lose 5 pounds in a week. This is not to say that you can never have a piece of birthday cake or a cookie. But if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off, note the calorie content in simple carbohydrates and eliminate them as part of your diet during a weight loss process. After you have lost the weight that you want to lose, you may introduce these food products into your system, but as a rare treat and not as a regular part of your every day diet. Avoid empty calories found in candy, soft drinks, juices, cakes, cookies and other sweets if you want to lose weight and keep the pounds from creeping back on. If you are someone who is having a problem getting started in your workout, you will be happy to know that there are ways that you can use 10 minute increments of your day to create the body that you want. This means you can do a series of exercises that are the most beneficial to make your workout better in a short time.
The way to do this is to add cardio and strength training together and to make it happen simultaneously. If this sounds crazy it is the base of a program called 10 Minute Trainer and it is the invention of fitness trainer guru Tony Horton. Many people have found that they can fit in 10 minutes easier than they can do a bigger workout. This is why they are using Horton's program. The point of the program is to get the most out of the 10, 20 or 30 minutes no matter when you are doing them. Most people fell they don't have to feel guilty about not doing the recommended 30 or 60 minutes of weight training and cardio a week because they know they are getting and overall workout within the 10 minutes. One of the things that most people like about this program is that it is very organized and it comes with all the things that you would want in a workout program. As an example, you can keep track of your workout by using the customized workout calendar. Horton takes the excuses out of doing a workout, and shows you how to adopt a new lifestyle in a shorter time. Everything about the program is related to 10 minutes. Another good example is the food list that is made up of the healthy food recipes that you can do within that 10 minute time period. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

![]() As you are losing weight many people worry about saggy skin, but they don't necessarily want to go to a gym to tone up those muscles. If you are looking for a better way to get your body in shape take a look at resistance bands. Although resistance bands are not a new concept the way they are used is being revamped. They may look like just a stretch band between two handles but let's think back several years. In the old days before fitness training was big on television and before you had so many fitness gyms to go to many people tuned in to Jack LaLane and Paige Palmer. These were fitness trainers doing full shows on how to get in shape with resistance bands. The reason they used them was because they were easy to find, easy to use at home and they gave the same type of workout that you would get in a gym. Today, you can use resistance bands with workout videos and get the same workout that you would get if you were using free weights. It is a fact that if you watch the resistance band videos you will not have to go to the gym to use the machines because you already have what you need. There are several workout programs that use resistance band training as an option. As an example, the P90X is a series of 12 DVDs that talk about strength training. In them resistance bands are use as an option if you aren't going to the gym. ChaLEAN Extreme DVDs also give you a total workout to burn fat and they show someone using resistance bands. People love resistance bands because you can take them in your luggage when you travel and workout in your room. This way you don’t have to miss your workout while you are on vacation. Some people are embarrassed to go to a gym especially when they have to lose more weight than others. There are several ways that a person can get started easily and quickly. When you want to get started, remember that doing something is better than doing nothing. This can mean that you just start walking around your house more often than you are used to doing. It can mean that you start walking around your backyard a few times before you walk around the block. You can also create short workouts in your living room that you can do over time. As an example, a few years ago people were Sweatin' To The Oldies with Richard Simmons. This was an easy aerobic workout that worked for many people to lose a lot of pounds. Today there are all types of workout videos that you can find that are worth your time and energy. The type that you get will depend on what you like. You can find workout videos and DVDs that combine all different types of music with them. These are a great place to start if you aren't sure what type of exercise you want to do. Check some out of the library first to try them and then purchase the ones that you like the best. Another thing you can do is to purchase a fitness ball and a few free weights. You will be amazed at what you can do with these few pieces of equipment and you usually can find a video that tells you how to use them. Before you start your workout program be sure to check with your doctor first in case there are any limitations. Now all you have to do is get started. ![]() There are dozens of things that can hold you back from finishing your fitness goals. I recently spoke with a friend of mine who said injury was the biggest thing that made him stop working out. Now injury is a difficult one because when you get injured you need to nurse that injury and get it healed before you can continue. The trick is to find out what exercises may be effected by that injury and either avoid then or replace them when you get back into working out. What you cannot do is allow that injury to never let you work out again. What happened with my friend is that well over a year ago he was very actively working out and getting himself into the best shape of his life, until he got injured. Since his injury he says it has been difficult to get back into a habit of working out. Partially because he is worried about re injuring himself greater and also because is is forced to back track and catch up to the point he was at before he got injured. It can be difficult to come back from an injury, but it is possible. Set some goals, come up with a plan and get back into the game. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X
Programs like the P90X come with nutrition plans that help you maximize the workout for you. I have talked to a number of people who have done the P90X, but did not follow the nutrition plan. Now did they still see results... absolutely, but to maximize every aspect of the workout it is best to follow the nutrition plan.
You see becoming fit and getting in the shape that you want is a two part system. The two parts are output and intake. Output is the exercise portion. Doing the actual physical workouts. The input is what goes in your body. The foods you eat and the nutrition plan you stick to is hugely important. The input is what fuels your body. If you are not eating and drinking what your body needs to fuel the output, you will not reach the fullness of the exercises. If you want to get the 100% best results then you need to stick to the nutrition plan. - Nick Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Many people have decided that going to a gym is not something they want to do. They get tired of the long lines or crowded machines, and they want something different. If you are feeling the same way it may be a good time to get started with your workouts at home. There are many ways that you can get started inexpensively and get the same sort of workout that you would in a gym. One of the ways you can do this is to order a home fitness program. This type of program comes with a series of DVD's that will get you started in no time. One such program is the P90X Extreme Workout System. This program says that it will get rid of flabby muscles within 90 days. This particular program is for people who want to become more muscular so that they can get into that swim suit or onto that surf board during the summer months. There are many other programs that you can find also that will help you get started at home. Another example is the ChaLEAN Extreme Workout. This is a program that is geared towards burning fat and it is a program that works for both men and women. Men and women are enjoying getting into shape within the privacy of their own home. It is more cost effective and easier than ever. With a workout program and a few free weights you can have your own mini-gym. We have seen many of our friends turn their living room into a mini gym for the duration of their workout, and come out a few weeks later looking trim and vibrant. They are receiving all kinds of compliments for just a few minutes, each week. We have our own home gym and encourage other people to do it too. The challenge is that if you wait until noon to eat, your body thinks you are starving until then and will store fat. Convenience foods are a part of the American culture just like the hamburger and French fries. When you eat them you get lots of high sodium and preservatives that make them unhealthy. Tomorrow is Valentines Day. Now it is going to be a safe assumtion to say that some of you out there are not in the shape you want to be in for Valentines day. Lets face it, Valentines Day is a fairly big day to say... look your best. But it is also a great day to set some goals for next year. Make it a goal to be in the shape you want to be in by next Valentines day. Here is why that is such a good idea.- Once V-day came around next year your present to your special someone could be you. All fit and fine. For all you guys that do not have much money... listen up. I just went out to buy my wife a gift, a card and some (anger) FLOWERS. HOLY MOLY... I serious have a slight hatred for V-Day because of how much they jack up the price of flowers. Now you are probably not going to get away with buying your lady no flowers but perhaps a fit body could help pad the pocket book of some of the other expenses. Seriously, after you buy flowers, a card, a gift, chocolates, the date, dinner and whatever else you are supposed to buy, you can hardly pay your own bills. I am starting to rant... Let me get back to the post. Setting a goal, sticking to it and accomplishing this over 12 months for that special someone is worth way the heck more then 12 flowers that die in a week. Here is what you do to really impress by next Valentines Day. Write a letter to that person now. Tell them how much you care for them and what you plan on doing for them over the next twelve months. Put that letter in a Valentines Day card and send it to yourself via snail mail. Yes, postmark it, put it in the mail addressed to you, at your house. You may have to be a little sneaky when it comes back to you at your house but get it out of the mail, DO NOT OPEN IT, and hide it. Don't forget where you put it. Now, set your goals, work out, get fit and when next year comes a long have that person open the card you sent to yourself(but for them) a year before. This is dated when you postmarked it, and now you have a V-Day card from a year ago explaining to that person how much they mean to you and how the whole year was dedicated to improving yourself just for them. OH MAN... That is some good stuff. That is a primo plan for anyone out there... and especially if you are broke. So make this a V-Day to set goals for next year. And if you do not have a date this year. Getting in better shape ain't gonna hurt your chances for a date next year. -Nick P.S. Here are some awesome workout videos that may help you get in shape. WARNING: These videos do cost money, so if you are broke... Sorry. P.P.S. Push ups are free though, so you have no excuse. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X
To many people the answer to the question is simple. To many people it is not. Why workout? What does it REALLY do? Some people say, "I'm not overweight and I feel good about myself, so why exercise?" Others say, "I do not believe it can work."
Sometimes knowing the benefits of working out may just be the reason you start or have a desire to work out. It has been proven time and again that exercise improves your overall health. Health is possibly the most important thing in life. Think about it... if you have all the money in the world... all the time to enjoy that money... if you have a great loving family... if you have a big house... if you have anything, but do not have your health... SO WHAT! Health pretty much trumps all. If you have diabetes so bad that you can hardly walk, how are you going to travel with freedom and fun? You may think that you are going to be just fine with your health, but why take that chance? Do everything to protect your health in order to live a long, great life. Do you ever have problems sleeping? Exercise is proven to release the stress and endorphins in your muscles which allow you to relax better, and in turn sleep better. That right there is enough for me to exercise, because I love my sleep. Exercise can give you a giant boost of self confidence. Especially when you reach your goals. Once you achieve the body you want, and a long the way your confidence grows. This can be huge if you are single... you want to pick up on the ladies (or men) then confidence is going to be a major part. There are many reasons why exercise is important, whether they are vain or not does not matter. Life is important... YOUR life is important, and fitness and exercise can only enhance your life. -Nick Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Now there has been a lot of controversy about if cheese is healthy for you or not, and there is a good reason why there is such a debate over it. Cheese is high in sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol, and if you are lactose intolerant than forget about it because cheese has milk. But while a lot of people are going nuts on why cheese is bad for you, there has got to be someone who stands up for cheese to defend it. Someone has got to speak out for the cheese heads of america and of the world, and I will take that responsibility. I feel that cheese has been wrongly accused!! The reason why cheese gets a bad rap, is not because of cheese itself, but because of PEOPLE! Yes, the people! It is the people who have taken advantage of cheese and its goodness, and it is not the cheeses fault that it is sooo good. That is like telling Tyra Banks that she can not have her own TV show because she is too good looking. Here is the fact... almost anything you eat to much of can be bad for you. But if cheese is used in moderation it can provide you with some great benefits. Cheese is an excellent source of calcium, most people to do get enough calcium in there system, but just one ounce of cheese can provide up to 200-300 mg of calcium. That is great news! Also, since cheese does have milk in it, it provides protein and vitamin B2, riboflavin. So if you are afraid of cheese, remember it has some nutritional value. Here comes the disclaimer... if you are pregnant you probably should stay away from soft cheese, and those cheeses includes:
The reason is because soft cheeses are more likely to have a Bacteria called Listeria, and if you become sick your baby can become sick to and you do not want that. If you want to do a workout, that has a nutrition guide for you, so you know what is healthy for you, than try doing the P90x routine, ChaLean Extreme workout, or the Ten Minute Trainer, these all have nutrition guides for you to follow. ~Matthew C. How often do you treat yourself to a big old bowl of ice cream, or some other sweet that you love? Not Much, every now and then, all the time? Most people that are on a diet plan or a exercise plan try to never eat that stuff. Althought that is probably the best option if you are trying to loose weight or stick to your workout plans, BUT I think that evey little bit, after we have accomplished a big goal, its okay to have a little treat. Here is what I do. You see I enjoy ice cream, but I do not eat it that much becuase I know that it would only set me back as far as reaching my goals. But I cannot live forever without ice cream, so I set for myself a fitness goal. Recently I went through the p90x workout. This is 90 days of intense workouts that GET RESULTS. It is truely an amazing program. At the beginnning of the workout I decided my first goal was going to be to make it through the first half of the whole program and give myself only 3 days off. If I completed this I would take day 45 off as well, and go get a big old coldstone ice-cream. What this did for me was give me a well needed mental break from the workout videos and from denying myself the sweets I desired for 45 days. Sometimes workouts can be strenous mentally too, and you need to relax your mind so that when you do workout you focus and do everything correctly to maximize your time. Eating a sweet, or a bowl of ice-cream is just the break my mind and body needed to give the next 45 days of workouts my all. It is okay to have sweets every so often, just make it a rare occasion. Hey the more rare it is the better it tastes when you do eat it. Just like the P90X, the ChaLean Extreme, is a high powered 90 day program to get you in shape. Do you have a busy schedule? Over the years there have been plenty of workout contraptions that have come out, promising gut busting results having to do hardly anything. Today, I am going to write about some of the most ridiculous workout gimmicks that have come out over the years.
The Ab Lounge - Okay anything with word lounge in it should be an automatic discredit of the product. The marketing of the lounge chair is that you can sit in front of the television and workout your abs at the same time, and get solid rock hard abs. I do give them credit though, because they really do know how to market to people who sit in front of the television and watch these infomercials. By offering them a workout machine that allows them to sit in from of a television, like they are already doing. The Thigh Master - Wow, I remember when this product came out. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My family got one, so I used it and realized that it did not do anything at all. But The Thigh Master's commercials were so good, it starred Susan Summers, and I thought I could trust the mother from one of my favorite television shows, "Step by Step." The most unbelievable part about The Thigh Master, is that it made millions of dollars. Pretty impressive for something that doesn't work, makes me wish I was in the business of making fake products. The Electrical Ab Belts - Electric shock therapy anyone? When I went to physical therapy for my knee, they hooked my knee up to a electrical shocker. So I asked my physical therapist (who has worked with the Washington huskies football program), "Do those electric ab belts actually work?" He laughed and said, "No." He said they are a complete fraud and you cannot get any muscles definition out of them, but they do irritate the skin well. So you might ask, "Why was he using an electric machine on the muscles around my knee?" Well, if you have ever had a knee injury, where you cannot walk or use your leg in any way for a long period of time. You will notice that one leg is way bigger than the other leg, that is because when you do not use your muscles not even for walking, they shrink like crazy! Seriously, it's weird! So the electric shock helps muscles that have been dorm-it for awhile to get back into a habit of being used again. It is like a little jump start. But to build real muscle back to my knee I actually had to workout. The Sauna Belt - This one is fun, it is a belt just like the electric shock belt, but with no shock! It uses heat to melt away the fat around your abs. Didn't you know that everyone has 6 pack abs hidden underneath their fat? Just melt the fat away and BAM!! Six Pack Abs!! Give me a break, how lazy do people have to be to think that they are going to get amazing abs by having a belt that melts fat away. Oh, and you can also wrap it around your butt so you can shed the junk in the trunk. If you really want to get great abs or thighs, or just get healthier. You need to get a workout program that works. Go to the gym, or get yourself the P90x fitness routine or ChaLean Extreme, which helps you blast through workout plateaus. But most importantly, you need to change your eating habits, and that does not mean you cannot have fun with what you eat. But you just need to manage your portions better and not pig out when ever there is food in front of you. That was my problem, if there was food in front of me I would eat it. It didn't even matter if I was full. Your body is important, so treat it like it is. ~Matthew C. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Yeah... you have heard that little voice in your head say, "Do Not Exercise."
Why? Well its hard work, you sweat, it can make you uncomfortable. The trick is ignoring that voice and those excuses and press through. ![]() Exercise is one of the most important aspects of your life. Exercise benefits more then just your health, like your confidence, strength, disease prevention, looks, stamina, sleep, mental strength, mental health and more. Building fitness as a habit is one of the most important things you can do in life. Learning to deny the urge to wake up 30 minutes later, sit and relax, not go to the gym will change your life. Action is the first step. Do you need to know where to start? Try the 10 Minute Trainer, are you already pretty fit and are looking to take it to the next level then the P90X is for you. If you want something extreme but not one hour per workout like the p90x then try out the chalean extreme. It is 30 minutes per workout. So take some action today and get out there and exercise. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X According to the Nutrition Sciences Program at the University of Washington the answer to this question is yes. They base their information on the fact that there seems to be a link between income and obesity. They say that in poor neighborhoods they have a tendency to not eat well because there are more fast food restaurants like McDonald's than there are grocery stores.Somehow they found that there are more obese people in zip codes that are considered poor than those that are not. The researchers are worried that the recession will make people spend more money on cheaper food choices than on buying good food. According to Adam Drewnowski, the director of the Nutrition Sciences Program, things can only get worse. According to a Live Science McDonald's is flourishing while Whole foods, a natural grocer is struggling. They seem to think this is an indication that people are being frugal with their money by buying the bargains at fast food restaurants like the dollar menu items. The challenge with this information is that they did not quote a study that was done so there is no way to know how the researchers came to this conclusion. In a different study it was found that poor diets are the cause of obesity. Did we already know this? There are so many different ways that people have found to study obesity and every day we have more information about it and what to do. The best way to lose weight remains to eat fruits and vegetables, nuts seeds and a little meat. If this is the case, why are people choosing to eat poorly? Is it really the recession or is this how it has always been? Although we probably will never know the answer to this question we can offer to people the simple truth that exercising is a very important part of what they need if they want to shed those extra pounds. Starting out at home with a workout routine, a set of resistance bands or a fitness ball can be the best investment you can do for your health. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

Nutritional supplements can help your body get the nutrients it needs, as you get your body in shape. The average American does not eat well and they lose valuable vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in their daily diet. Lots of fast food and restaurant food will diminish the body's nutrients which will throw the body out of balance.
Scientists have studied this phenomenon and they realize that many diseases that people get are due to a lack of nutrition. The body reacts to the lack of vitamins and minerals by breaking down the system in some way. This leads to allergies, specific physical or mental challenges and ultimately to disease. There are many supplements on the market that are of good nutritional value and if you do not eat well, it is a good idea to add them to your diet. You can choose from bars or powders and they come in different flavors. Protein bars Many protein bars say that they have enough nutrition, but you should look for one that has at least 18 grams of protein. These bars are great when you are on the go and need something to eat. It is better to use one of these as a meal replacement than to skip the meal altogether. You will also find that the better ones keep you full longer and they help you keep to your peak performance. Protein bars are great for those times when you need a little boost to your energy or when you just want to have a healthy snack. Nutritional powders and shakes The basic difference between powders and shakes is the way they are made. If you don’t mind mixing up your drink, a powder is good and it is more cost effective. If you want to be able to grab and go a shake that is already premixed is a good idea. You will usually find the ingredients of whey or soy in the products if you want them for weight loss. Natural powders are better than those with lots of chemicals because they are usually lower in fat content. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X Work out for a few weeks right before summer.Sporadic exercise through the summer but you feel good. Exercise is even more sporadic, if there at all, through the fall and pretty much dies off in the winter, and around the holidays. Start everything all over again after you've put on a little holiday weight and are out of shape. Does this little routine sound familiar to anyone? Sure it does, this is what a lot of people go through with their exercising. Some people are even worse. A week here of exercising and dieting, start to see some results, quit, then the old way returns. Exercise can be a very difficult thing to build into a habit, but you build tons of other habits in your life so it is possible. Here are a couple of tips to making exercise a habit in your life. 1. Find an exercise you enjoy. - If you absolutely hate running, then do not try to turn that into a habit. Maybe you like biking, or hiking, or lifting, or stairs. It can be anything, but if don't despise it, you'll have a better chance of doing it daily. 2. Try to find something you can do in your home. - Finding the time to go to the gym, or dealing with bad weather can throw a real curve ball into your routine. If you are able to find something in your home to do then it is much easier to do it day after day. There are tons of workout videos that can help you achieve this. 3. Find a short workout to do daily. - You don't need to build a habit of an hour a day. Even just 10 minutes of habitually exercise will make a tremendous difference in your life. You can always go workout for an hour at the gym when you have time, but doing 10 minutes a day EVERYDAY is better then once every week for an hour. If you are looking for an effective 10 minute a day workout you can try Tony Hortons Ten Minute Trainer. There are a lot of ways to build exercise as a habit in your life, but the one that is going to count the most is action. You need to take action. I can give you tips all you want, but it is going to come down to you. Whether or not you decide to do it. -Nick Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

![]() So at one point you have probably seen a Stability ball, they are in the gym, in the store, in the physical therapy clinics and even on an episode of The Office. They were first used for physical therapists, but over the last couple years, stability balls have been popping up all over the place. So here is the question, "Do they work?" Before I answer that question, I would like to share all the more popular names that the Stability ball has. Just in case you are confused on what I am talking about. The Stability ball also goes by exercise ball, Swiss ball, Pilates ball, sports ball, fitness ball, Swedish ball, and Pezzi ball. It has other names but these are the most popular terms, so hopefully you know what I am talking about now. So do Swiss balls work? Surprisingly yes, I say surprisingly because there are so many gimmicks that come out in the exercise market, but these have actually been around since 1963. Crazy huh? Stability balls are great for rehabilitating injuries, hence why physical therapists use them, but there are also a wide variety of muscle building routines that can be performed on the ball. The reason why the exercise balls work, when performed properly is because your muscles have to fight for stability while on the ball. So not only are you doing crunches but all these other little muscles are also fighting to keep you core stable. When working on your core the exercise ball helps develop your: Transverse Abdominus - which are deep abdominal muscles Tultifidus - which are muscles that help support your spine Quadratus Lumborum - which are muscles in your lower back that help the spine and pelvic region balance. The great thing about these swiss balls, is that they are not expensive, are easy to use, can be used as an extra chair in a room, have low maintenance, and you can find great free workouts online all over the place. So stop wondering and start trying them out. There are plenty of exercise videos out there, and if you are looking for core workouts, the P90x workout has a great routine for your abs ~Matthew C. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X If you are a woman over 40 you know that strength training is very important to your overall health. This is a way to make sure that your muscles and your bones keep working well for you. Resistance training is how you develop your strength and there are several ways you can workout at home using resistance equipment. You may be most familiar with dumbbell weights because many people have used one or two 5-10 pound weights at sometime in their lives. The smaller ones come in 3,5, 8 and 10 pounds which are ideal for many exercises you can do at home. These are usually made of a material like neoprene and are durable. You can always take one with you in the car and use it at the office between breaks. Another type of resistance equipment is the resistance bands. These are the multi-colored bands that you may have seen in the fitness section of a retail store. They come in a variety of weights just like dumbbells and are more versatile than other types of resistance equipment. You can toss a band into a suitcase if you are going on vacation and use them in your room instead of going into the gym. You can usually find them as singles or in kits of several different weights; they also come with interchangeable handles. Do you remember in the old days when you went to gym class you had to use those heavy medicine balls? No one ever really knew what they were for then but today you can use them for resistance training. You can use a 4 pound or 8 pound ball to get started and you use them in the same way that you would use weights. They are great for improving strength, sculpting areas of your body like your abs or for strengthening your core. Small resistance equipment doesn’t take up a lot of space in your home like a machine would do and they are a lot more fun. When you combine them with a DVD program like the ChaLEAN Extreme workout you get a full workout at home. Using the restistance bands for your workout is possible and the best part of Chalene Johnson's newest workout is that they show you how you can do the same workouts without ever owning or lifting a dumbbell. If you are beginner and would want to have a positive experience with your yoga practice, a yoga mat is very essential. Yoga involves various poses in different positions such as standing, sitting and supine positions. A hard floor may put pressure on your joints and skeletal muscles resulting in soreness and discouragement. A carpet may slip under your feet and cause you to injure your joints or bones. There are different types of mats that can help you practice your asanas or poses and maintain them for the required lengths of time. Yoga mats can be made of various types of materials such as rubber, cotton, latex and microfiber. The sticky mat is the very popular and is commonly used by beginners. These are thin mats that do not slip under your feet and have some padding to give you a comfortable practice session. The amount of padding depends on your choice and your level of practice. Meditation Mats: Meditation requires perfect harmony between the mind and body. Therefore one cannot be distracted by pains and aches. This mat can either be stuffed or comes with a pillow. It cradles your legs, especially your ankles giving you a comfortable session without distractions. Universal Style Yoga Mats: This is the basic type of mat has a textured and tacky surface that keeps your hands and feet from slipping and also slightly cushions your hands and feet as you perform your asanas. Deluxe Yoga Mats: This mate is like the universal mat, but it has a higher texture and tackiness that allows a good grip and a comfortable practice session. Cushioned Mats: These mats are usually sticky mats, but have a double padding that is required for certain yogic practices that are more dynamic and requires the person to changes various poses. Cotton Mats: These are non-sticky mats that are cushioned and absorbent. They cradle the body as well as absorb sweat. Some mats have straps on the sides so that they can be rolled up and carried whereas other mats come with carrying bags. For the most suitable type of mat, consult your yoga instructor. In order to enjoy my experience I know that I will need to be in tip top shape and workout regularly. I did a training climb on Mt. Rainier one summer that I knew I was not in good enough shape for. It was the most miserable day of my life, while a lot of my team that were in great shape thought it was wonderful. 1. Health: - Health is one of the most important aspects of the human life. You can workout to aerobics or you can do workouts that require special workout equipment. These videos and DVDs allow you to exercise along with the instructor. You will learn how to do the workouts and can do it on your own time. You have to work up to a full session. If the workout DVD starts you out right away with a long session, you may need to break it down yourself. If you have never exercised on a regular basis, you do not want to do an hour routine right away. Like the Chalean Extreme workout dvds, they have been broken down to about 30 minute workout sessions. You can look around at the many workout tapes or DVDs and find one that you think you would be able to do. Remember that it should be something that can keep you motivated and something that you enjoy doing. Once you feel comfortable with the workout, you can do it for the entire session and then you will start seeing the results. Things will go slow at first, but after some time, you will feel better and start seeing how exercising can help you. Find a workout DVD that will offer you the benefits of losing weight. If you eat right and exercise regularly, you will be healthier and feel healthier. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X

You have seen them in the retail stores either online or off and you probably wonder what the heck these great big balls can do for your fitness. Actually these are a very important aspect of any workout routine. An exercise ball with the right DVD can create a more toned body. You can improve your core stability, increase your balance and help your cardiovascular system. You will also see that you become more flexible in your movements as you continue to use the ball. One of the things you may not know is that fitness balls come in different sizes based on your height. When you are testing them out you should sit on the ball and your hips should be level or a little higher than your knees. This will happen if you chose the right one for your height:
If you think that you are too overweight to use one think again: many fitness balls hold up to 600 lbs and are burst resistant. This makes it a very versatile piece of fitness equipment that you can use at home even it if it only to get you started in your movement. Many people find that using a program like Chalene Johnson Get On The Ball or Turbo Jam Maximum Results can be a fun way to get you moving and using the ball. This can be more fun than going out to a gym. Fitness balls are an excellent choice for every type of fitness. As an example, you can use them for weight training (you can sit on it instead of a bench and work your legs, abs and butt), you can stretch and relax on it or use it for yoga. Many people use a ball to sit at their desk or in front of their computers. It is one of the best pieces of equipment to get you started back on the road of fitness. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X What you eat is important. If you overeat, your body will not use up the excess calories, which in turn will turn to fat. You need to know how many calories a day you need. You can determine this by looking at a chart and checking your height, ideal weight and body structure. The amounts of calories you need a day are to sustain a normal weight. Once you know what your daily calorie intake should be, you can plan your daily meals. Foods that are low in fat and high in protein are good foods to eat. Eat foods that have good carbohydrates and not bad carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are vegetable and fruits, cereals with less than thirty grams of carbohydrates and more than three grams of protein and fiber, breads with three grams of fiber and three grams of protein and beans. Bad carbohydrates are baked goods with a lot of refines sugars. This includes soda and cookies. The exercise workout should be done every day or every other day. Some people feel that because they go to work every day, they do not need to exercise. This is not true. You have to work the body with a structured routine. Just because you work every day, does not mean you are working every part of the body. Muscles that are not worked will become weak. You need to have an upper and lower body workout. This will mean doing some exercises meant for each part of the body. The lower body workout can be done by riding a bicycle. This can be a stationary bike or a road bike. The upper body workout can be weight lifting. A total body workout could be aerobics or swimming. Make sure that you work the entire body. You might work the lower body one day and work the upper body the next day. Rotating your workout this way will keep you from over doing the workout when you first start. If you keep yourself motivated and eat properly, you will be able to keep up with a daily exercise routine that will help you with weight loss and keep your body healthy. When you first get started back to doing fitness it is often difficult to understand how to get started. One of the things you will need to do is choose the equipment that works best for you. In order to do this, you will need to experiment with them. Many people are used to using dumbbells because this is what they have found in most gyms. Even as kids in high school many will have used some form of dumbbell in their classes when they were studying different types of fitness. Dumbbells can be cumbersome and they can be difficult to carry if you are going to go on a vacation or you are traveling for business. They will add a lot more weight to your bags when you get onto a plane. Resistance bands are versatile and easy to carry. The weight is in the bands and the resistance is what creates the weight in your hand. You can put them in a suitcase or a backpack and take them anywhere you go. If you have a few minutes between classes or are on a break at work, you can use your resistance bands easily. When you use a dumbbell it is difficult to get resistance during the full motion. You pull up or down but the motion isn't always fluid. With resistance bands the resistance carries across the full motion. This allows you to control your exercise and you will be working muscles that you cannot reach with dumbbells. Resistance bands are a lot easier to work with than dumbbells. As an example, you can do upper body strengthening with a band. You can attach it to a door knob and pull against it for strengthening your core exercises; you can also use them for your legs. When you are working out with other equipment you will often get to a plateau. You can switch to the resistance bands to help you break that plateau and let your body get used to a different routine. Although many people prefer dumbbells because this is what they started with, resistance bands can give you a better and more versatile workout. Your Place For: Workout Routines - Workout DVDs - P90X ![]() Motivation or lack of it is why most people fail to workout at home. You need to find a workout routine that you can do without becoming bored with it. Boredom is the number one reason people fail in their attempts to workout at home. You have to plan something that you will do every day without fail. Most people do not find the time during the day to workout, so you might want to start your day off with a healthy breakfast and then some exercise. If you have problems working out at home, maybe you need to have a workout partner. There are many people that go to the gyms and they do this not only for the exercise, they do this because they can go with someone else or they meet people there for conversation while they are working out. Motivation comes from yourself and from others around you. If you find that you are having problems exercising by yourself at home, this might be an option you could look into. Aspirations are another way to keep yourself motivated. If you keep telling yourself you are going to do something and succeed at it, eventually you are going to do just that. Make up your own aspiration and repeat it daily many times. You will be surprised at how well this works. This will keep you motivated to succeed. Before any workout, make sure that you eat properly. Many people feel sluggish when they are exercising because they do not have the nutrition they need to keep up their momentum. If you eat a healthy meal before beginning your exercise, you will find that staying motivated is easier than if you do not. Eating the right foods is important. Eating foods that weight you down will not benefit you when you are exercising. Keep your routines short in the beginning and work your way up. The time is not an issue when you start, but after you are accustomed to exercising and have the motivation, you will be able to increase the time that you spend exercising. If you are a person who enjoys working out at home, finding the correct workout is very important. Usually a workout DVD will be sufficient but finding the best will take a little research. The P90X workout is the most popular workout routine you can do from home. Millions of people have already seen results and changes to their life, after doing the p90x workout. For women alike, there is a new workout called Chalean extreme that can be done from home. It doesn't just focus on building muscle, but using that muscle to actually burn away fat and how it can speed up your metabolism, making the process of losing weight much easier. Swedish researchers have found that there is no difference for teen risk between obesity and smoking cigarettes. In both cases teens set themselves up for premature death, especially when they are smoking more than 10 cigarettes a day.The study looked at 45,000 18-year-olds where their Body Mass Index (BMI) and smoking status were recorded because of a military conscription test. They watched these men for 38 years and found at the end of that period 2,897 had died. They compared the statistics for the men at age 18 and 38 years later and found that those who were obese at 18 were more likely to be dead in the follow up. What was interesting about the study is that they found that those who were severely underweight at 18 years old were also more prone to have died in the follow-up study. The researchers concluded that the teen age years are a very important time for teenagers to work on their overall health. Today most of us know that childhood obesity is a big problem in the United States with about 60% of children showing more weight than is healthy. Studies show that 70% of children who are obese when they are adolescents become obese adults. It has been proven that a child's eating habits are established by the time they are 12 years old. With this in mind it means that the days of telling children to eat everything on their plate may not be the best idea. Instead, it may mean that children need to exercise more and that parents will want to take part in this exercise with their children. Some children have a difficult time getting outside for exercise and there is a better way to get them started. Many children are enjoying a program called Shaun T's Fit Kids Club. This DVD program is done by kids with Shaun T's guidance and it is fun, upbeat and full of activities that children enjoy. Children must learn good nutrition and exercise in order to prevent obesity as adults and parents can help them early by getting them started at home. Types of Home Gym Equipment The treadmill is a great way to exercise, especially if you prefer not to walk outside or you want to watch TV while you are doing it. You can walk a few miles a day and work the upper and lower parts of the body. The weight bench with weights can give the body a full body workout. There are many different styles and some have leg and arm workout advantages. Rotate Your Workout If you use a home gym setup, you still want to have at least one or two other routines to do. You want to work the entire body and have a different routine to do so you stay motivated. If you are looking for a workout routine, you can use weight lifting equipment, but you still need to have another exercise routine.
